Bad lighting mixed with the fast shutter speed needed for these little speed demons brought quality down a good bit but still some neat pics. Hoping to get some more this weekend since i wont be working the day away. And yes, that is a mason jar and a JIF peanut butter lid that I jerry-rigged into a feeder.

I'm in Conroe and they're starting to get pretty thick. Seeing more each day.

Is there a time your supposed to quit feeding them so they leave for migration on time?

My brother-in-law in Nashville actually got a picture of one with it's tongue extended. He is really in to photography and has some special lenses that allowed him to capture that.

We have 4 feeders going around Longview now and they seem to be seeing an increase in activity. I saw 7 of them around two feeders at the same time last night.

Those are great pictures. My hummingbirds are more about keeping other birds from the feeders than they are about eating. They love a good fight. bang

One from today. This feeder is much further away but proper lighting always wins.

Had this big guy come and steal the show. Always have plenty of does around but the bucks usually keep their distance (I wonder why...)

Some people say October 1. Then again, some people leave them up all the way into full blown winter. Just in case there are stragglers coming thru looking for a much needed handout, they say. I've left them up all winter before, but never noticed any stragglers after about mid October, maybe? A couple years ago I had some eating out of a feeder I was holding. That was pretty neat.

Don't pull the feeders till it gets cold. The birds know when to leave, if you have them used to a feeder and just all of a sudden quit filling it, thats not going to make them migrate, its just going to cause them to have to scramble to find food.

Some nice photos! cheers
This spring was the worst around here for numbers of hummingbirds at 1-3 around the feeder. Just last week around Tuesday the numbers picked up with the fall migration to around 6-7. Here are some pics from last year in Sept. I had 5 feeders running during a 2 week period and had 30+ at any given time around those feeders. The best was from Sept. 7th till the 18th.

stxranchman, do you give photography lessons? I'd sign up after you tell me what camera and lens to buy. Amazing photos. I love hummingbirds, they are so cool.

We haven’t put any feeders up for a few years. Got tired of the bees, ants and squirrels messing with them. Any tips on keeping them at bay?

No I don't since I am not that knowledgeable on camera equipment like someone who has been taught the correct way to photograph. I learn as I go and take photos in the style I like not what someone else might like or was taught was correct way to take them.

I have to move mine around on the porch everyday from the sugar ants getting to them. I spray the porch posts with Raid to keep flies down. Wasps were bad but have not been that bad the last week or so now.

Thanks....Ruby Throated and Black Throated are the most common here.
