This is where I'm at. I don't know what your genetics are, but he'd be coming out of my herd.

Genetics aren't bad but we have better...……...not much better though. I'm thinking he's just fat, if you only look at the face and back he's only 4.5 but the his gut stands out and makes him look older. We have tons of persimmon and still some green browse + protein all year and water troughs everywhere.

Looks to be more mature, pot bellied and full in the chest, in a year when we have had PLENTY of rain, his antler development should have been better I would think. He is trying to form another point on his left beam so you might wait one more year.

Do not be too quick to judge his age. That bucks chest & neck will fil out a lot, a whole lot in the next 45 days. Increased testerone levels will kick in with the loss of velvet and he will pick up muscle fast.

Hard to tell from night pics but I would call him mature.

The line of the back will change with the vertical position of the neck/head. When deer have head down all the way eating on the ground most of their backs bow up. If his head was up his back would look different.

Chest/neck line, bump on hips and shoulder, gut etc. I would be thinking 5+.

What area are you in? Has it been dry?

If you want to gamble on a wet year next year he will likely be better. We have been in a couple year slump with pizz poor rainfall during antler growing seasons and not much better the rest of the year.

It rained just a couple of miles south of you and due west of GW last week....3.5" is what my cousin got on one of his cattle leases.

I would call that buck in first pics either 6 or 7 and more 7. Down in South Texas I have seen bucks that had a bad antler growth in a bad rainfall year jump back and improve at 7 or 8 or older. Most ranches do not shoot bucks till they are 7, if they went down from 6 to 7 on antler growth many of them will give them a pass for another year. More than what you would think improve the next year(with average or above rainfall) and have their best set of antlers.

Funny thing is I'm seeing improvements in other deer, a select few seem to have plateaued. I'm not gonna rush to shoot anything unless its over 150'', what I'm worried about is my oldest son (14), this will be his third year hunting solo, he shot a 5.5yr old 10 last year that he misidentified or got the fever, I didn't get on his a$$ about it because he was to excited but after the excitement wore off I educated him some more. He and I will be studying pictures a little harder this year.

I guess we are all different, but i'd get that boy a beer and help him gut it. To me management of deer, aging etc. comes with time. He is young yet and having fun.

Probably not too different, you have to factor in he's killed better deer and we have multiple legit culls that are on a hit list that are all free game to him. Him and his younger brother do 90% of the shooting every year, my younger son still hunts with me and you can imagine the competition between the two.

Probably something to that too. I didn't grow up hunting on a lease that had an opportunity for mature deer. After I shot 2 90 inch 8 points and a few does a year for 10 years I decided I wanted more and we went about figuring out how to do that. It was a progression. Had I started out on a property like yours or another managed property im sure what I was allowed to shoot would have been different.

Im still pondering how we will handle this with my brothers boys and my kiddos as they approach hunting age. They will likely start on hogs/javi move to does, and then to cull/spike deer then to what our "trophy" deer are.

Yeah, they're lucky...………….Started both my of my boys on an AR because it fit them best...………….Lots of range time, plinking, pigs, then deer...………….Main thing is to build confidence and get them familiar with the gun (safety), I might have started mine a little too young (both shooting at 6) but I can tell a difference between them and most other kids that I've hunted with.
