My hat is off to that man. Wouldn't it be nice if we all had that kind of money and the free time to devote to a piece of property.

I was on the place a couple of times back in the 90's. Nice place but a lot of money was spent to get it to the shape and condition it was today. Cost prohibitive for the vast majority of people.

I agree - lots of money - but if someone had the money what better way to spend it

As if I needed another reason to get me some chicken. I am thinking about getting some Church's chicken tonight, lol. Gotta support people like this and ya gotta eat anyway...

There is place north of Snyder, a couple from Georgia bought it and started a massive conservation program, then I don't know what happened, but the mesquites that were grubbed up and replaced with natives grasses have returned. and the place looks like hell. The old Henson place south of Abilene by Cedar Gap was a beautiful place, deer could be seen from the highway, now the scrub mesquite have taken over the fields,

It is not a short teem project, the mesquite and cedar will return with a vengance the moment the owners turn their back.

I have been on the ranch several times with Blanco County 4H kids and other groups. Mr. and Mrs. Bamberger acquired the typical Hill Country ranch and made it into an example for all land owners to follow. Leroy Petri is an artist with heavy machinery. He built so many tanks that the springs and tanks and piping system serves all of the households on the ranch with 50 psi of water pressure. Buddy Francis, the Ranch Manager during the reclaiming process was instrumental in accomplishing the goals of the Bamberger's. Yes, the Bamberger's spent a ton of money but the example they set has been followed in larger or lesser degrees by many Hill Country land owners. The result is improved pastures for livestock and wildlife all through out the Central Texas area. Their educational process continues and as more people see their example, each person can see their land and the possibilities they can apply even with limited resources. In my opinion, their money was well spent and with a greater return to all of us whether we are landowners, hunters, or environmentalists.

Great read, thanks for posting. I'm gonna try to do some of what they did, with a smaller place and a whole lot less capital in the ol' portfolio. grin It's a diamond in the rough and was pretty much neglected for at least 20 years. The good news is they only kept a minimal number of cattle on it, no sheep or goats, but I'm sure it had goats many years ago (Kimble county).

From what I saw on the last little place we owned, that's not too far from where the ranch in the article is, it takes a whole lotta years to recover from 100 years of too many sheep and goats.

I had access to the property on the east border of Bamberger back in the ‘90’s. I remember the rancher referring to Bamberger as “goofy”.

Did a great job with the ranch. There are videos on YouTube that show some of his improvements.

Taking the cedars out is something that all landowners should consider...they are water vampires that drink 24/7/365 and cause awful allergies to boot!

Mesquites as well. You can grow 8lbs of grass with the water it takes to grow one lb of hardwood.

Our deer live and move around in the mesquite. You remove the mesquites they will live somewhere else. You need a mixture of cover and open/grassy areas. Once brush control stopped being subsidized out west the deer took off.

That's very true...many more deer in West Texas than ever before!
