Our cattle guy normally does our winter food plots every year, he is gone now so I have to figure it all out. I need to plant about 25-30 acres. Anyone know about how many lbs per acre for winter wheat? I've heard around 60? Also would appreciate any thoughts on where to get it from around Gorman/Desdemona/Stephenville. I don't even know what the current cost is.

Amount to use is going to depend on how it is placed. That many acres I would assume you are drilling. Hope you aren’t broadcasting. Drilled wheat is around 60# acre give or take, but double that for broadcast.

70-90# per acre, I broadcast and drag with a 26' spike harrow. I Do 90# and I plant about 45 acres.

I use feed oats and wheat, not SEED oats. We get 90 percent germination at much less cost.

similar here ... I usually buy a deer blend seed mixture from our local feed store (that just went out of business, so I will have to find a new place) that has a 9-10 seed combination, majority is oats & wheat. I put out about 100# per acre of FEED oats and about 5-6# per acre of the blended mixture. I plow my plots pretty deep, broadcast seed and then go back over with my disk very lightly to cover up. I plant in the dust usually and pray for rain. Some times its a week or so, out to a couple of months depending on the year before there is enough rain to get them started but sometimes they fail.

I believe that's what the rancher does with wheat on the place up in the panhandle, 70-80# per acre, 80 acres ... deer come from miles

We plant 2-3 bushels of oats per acre and we also use FEED oats (65-100lbs). If you're not planning on cropping this that is what I would recommend. It should be cheaper unless you already have the wheat. If you have the wheat and are drilling it, I would go with 60lbs or so. I was always told you could dust in oats but wheat needed to be planted on recent moisture. Good luck!

I only plant about 10 acres each year, but it has been my experience that it is worth the little extra money, to buy certified seed. Seems to germinate better and much better stand. I buy all me seed from Turner seed company, in Breckenridge.

We went on the cheap one year and bought oat seed from a neighbor down the road. It was loaded with Mustard Weed. We fought that with herbicide for about 5 years before the field cleaned up. Never again. We only buy certified cleaned seed now.

you mentioning the mustard weed, my FIL was so tight he could rub 2 pennies together and get a dime ... anyway, one year he bought some type of cheap oats (dirty) from another guy in the area that he planted and the oats came up pretty sparse but the next year he got a full stand of miserable sunflowers, thick thick thick!!! He fought those for years but all he was really doing was replanting sunflower seeds when he plowed them under. It did make for some good dove hunting, but not so much for the oat crop to feed his livestock.
