What’s everyone’s input on hunting this teal season with the blue green outbreak?? I’m assuming the media has hyped it up this year and it’s always been around.

Look at your water..

I haven't noticed anything on any of the pond I train in or the places we will be hunting teal.

Easy to spot for sure. The only thing that gets me is that the latest story that killed a couple of dogs, the water was clear. Apparently it can still do damage after it isn't visible any longer.

I'm not fear mongering, I'll be out there with my pup. All my teal hunting is big water anyway. Seem like another thing like all the random mosquito diseases the media latches on to and drives into the ground.

Please be more clear. You had three dogs die in North Carolina, or you saw all the news about the three dogs that died in North Carolina?

We've had some dogs die up here and in Colorado. Don't fish the affected waters, eat fish from affected waters, betting birds would be iffy as well. Some area waters have safe parts and algae affected parts, they tell us you're ok in the clear water.
2 dogs died from Laramie area and more than that down in N. Colorado so far.
Don't take your dog into affected water. It can make you sick as well.

I bet a lot of dogs said to be killed by blue green algae are killed by something else, not tested, and just assumed to be from the water. When my vizsla started showing symptoms from a tick disease it was first thought to be from blue green algae because she had just been hunting on a special hunt at a Kansas state park known for blue green algae blooms. In fact the purpose for the hunt was to drive away Geese that was the source of the algae blooms due to the massive waste they created in the water. The park was having to be closed for long periods every year because of the algae blooms.

A few years ago Texoma was closed to swimming due to testing positive for blue green algae. Only if one read the fine print, one would have to drink massive quantities of the water to have a problem from it. It was a great year for me to hunt up there with my dog as the areas I hunted definitely had less hunting pressure in the early season because of the media hype. I'm sure there are perfect storm type situations with toxic algae like when I got necrotising fasciitis from a puncture wound at my hunting lease or my dog ehrlichiosis from a tick bite, but my dog and I will still be out there hunting despite all the risks that come with a hunting dog. You can't Teal hunt and expect there to not be algae in the water. Sure I would keep the dog out of the water if it is obvious, but your much more likely to have things like poisonous snakes, tick diseases, overheating, gastric torsion, alligators, etc. get your dog while out hunting.

Did the dogs die from Algae or foxtail/cheet grass? I know of alot more grass awns hurting dogs In Laramie/Colorado than algae.

I read that article. It was a single incident. Only one of the three got in the water, two stayed on the edge. The water was clear with no visible algae. One of them was having seizures and foaming at the mouth on the way home and taken to the vet. The two others died shortly after. "Vet suspected" blue green algae.
