I had a conversation today with a man who was born on a 25,000 acre ranch near Elizabethtown, south Africa. He owned it after his parents died. He had, gemsbok, kudu, impala, dieker, warthog, bushpig, two kinds of wildebeest, gazelle and others. I asked if he had eaten all of it and he said he had, I asked his what was the best and he said the gemsbok is great but the kudu backstrap was the best of all.
He sold and moved to the US when 15 of their dollars were 1 US dollar. Then to leave the country, they took 50% of his money, by law.
Anyway,I would like to eat my way acrossthat ranch someday.

The conversion rate today is about 14:1...don’t know how long ago he sold his piece.

We inquired about some land in Limpopo (always curious since I’m in the business ) and they are selling good hunting land for around $500/acre.

Anyway, we had Kudu, Nyala, Waterbuck and wildebeest.

Everything we had except for the kudu was in a stew or rice mix and was good. It’s heavily seasoned so I honestly couldn’t tell the difference between the meat but it had good flavor and wasn’t tough at all.

We had grilled kudu loon and then kudu neck roast ( bone in) and I can honestly say it was excellent.....the loin was my favorite, cooked rare it was tender and sweet. Not just good for game meat but one of the best cuts I’ve ever eaten. The neck roast was good as well just not a lot of meat:bone.

I’ve eaten a lot of types of game ( duck/turkey, quail, axis, fallow, sika, Nilgai, elk, mule & whitetail deer, etc) and the kudu blew them all out of the water.

I’m not the greatest chef though so it’s possible it could have been re-created with another Animal, just to be fair

Well, I will probably die never having tasted the best meat on earth it looks like.

I've never eaten Kudu, but I can tell you of all the African antelope I have eaten, Eland was by far the best.

Kudu is great, we actually took the reigns on cooking the backstrap on the one I shot. As far as African game goes, the BEST Ive ever had was Bongo. I would like to try Eland, that is one thing I've never had.

Have eaten all of the animals in my trips over to Africa, and can't say I have ever had a bad meal. Even ox tail from Cape buffalo is tender and juicy, with wonderful flavor. The three best in my opinion are eland, kudu, and finally gemsbok. An eland tenderloin is about the size of one of our deer's backstraps!!!

Even Eland liver is pretty dang tasty, grilled in strips, a few hours after tipping it over.

Can I come deer hunt with you! I've eaten 14 plains game species and 1 dangerous game. My vote would be for eland as well.

I've had a ton of African game too, with the exception of eland, which everyone over there puts at the top of the list. My personal favorite game meat is axis, gemsbok, kudu, moose, elk. nilgai, in that order.

I agree with the Elizabeth Town rancher, Kudu blackstrap is outstanding. Only thing in the US that is close is elk. We also had some springbok sausage that was stupid good.

Can't say I have ever heard of Elizabeth Town, I am sure he meant Port Elizabeth.
All the game meat mentioned is delicious, and we offer cuts of meat to our clients from the animals they hunted. The meat is fantastic, especially the Kudu, Eland and Gemsbok. For me Bushbuck is the least desirable, it is very lean and extremely "sour" tasting.
Umm I would disagree with the 50% tax, that is not true. Our income tax is at 40% and those South African citizens earning money abroad are double taxed but there is no "Tax" for leaving the country. It is against our constitution. They may prevent you from leaving if you have taxes outstanding but do not give you a leaving tax.

We had kudu blackstrap, but I thought gemsbok was better. But by far the best was impala pie prepared at the first place I stayed. That might be the recipe or the cook, though. All the South Africans were raving about it, too.

Cleaning out the freezer in preparation for the next hunting season's bounty. Found my last 3 packages of scimitar oryx, so I'm excited for a BBQ.

I agree 100%. Everything I've eaten over there has been delicious, especially eland and gemsbok. Mountain reedbuck is one of the really underrated meats over there though, probably because they're not as widespread as most other species of plains game. I hunted South Africa with Big Game Hunting Adventures a few years ago and shot a nice reedbuck ram and they prepared an absolutely delicious meal out of it. I still think eland is the #1 best tasting animal over there, but mountain reedbuck is a close second.

Kudu is good but eland is better. Impala can be really good too, espeially the liver. On a side note I took a big roan bull in Cameroon and that was pretty good table fare too.
