Fine arts major. "You want fries with that?" My Wife has an Art History degree. She says 'My basic rate is $250.00 an hour and I'll need a retainer of $10,000.00 to take your case'.

cyber security engineering, software engineering and computer engineering would be some of the top choices if I was going back to school, or my kids or grandkids (if their math skills were top notch)

I get it, techy jobs are the future. The problem is you have to stare at a computer all day. I wouldn’t wish that on anyone, much less my kids/grandkids.

I don't think electric future is near as close as some think. If you knew what our robotic, AI and automation is currently capable of... you would rethink that. Military and medical are perfect example.

In the future we will depend on nuclear power. Nuclear chemist will be a decent paying job.

In our family of five I am the only one that does not have a college degree, I went to trade school to be a machinist. I was lucky enough to be hired by Eastman Chemical at their Longview plant and they required all maintenance to be mechanics, even the welders. They had their own apprentice program and when you graduated you were US Department of Labor certified. Later transferred to inspection and got API-510 and 570 certified along with most of the other needed certifications on their time and nickel. Retired and started work at another company, retired again and have had several offers to go back to work. So far I have out earned my wife and three children with their college degrees although the Electrical Engineer is getting close. Did you work similar structure and # of hours as your wife and kids? Actually my wife was a teacher and she put in more hours a week than I did for about 1/2 the pay. She left about the same time I did in the morning and if we did not have a turnaround or a major problem I would get home an hour or two before and have dinner cooked when she got home. She usually brought home two to three hours of papers to grade or worked making lessons for her and the other teachers. She went to the school on Saturday and Sunday to work with other teachers to build "Centers" and "Work Stations" and do the lesson plans for the week. It did pay an extra stipend which helped out on her retirement calculation. My base salary before overtime and bonuses was higher than my electrical engineer son. That said I had numerous years with 500 to 900 hours of overtime which was used to pay off the house and save for college. We were debt free by the time I was 46 so we both maxed out our 401K's and put the rest into CD's, school bonds and other investments. Moved from the CD's when the bottom fell out.

We have contractor that does AX programming. He's getting at lease $120/hr. learn to code. Do you mean Tridium “AX” programming? That is a HVAC/BMS control programming platform for the Niagara Frameworks and there are thousands of open opportunities for 6 figure jobs in that field. Knowing Java helps but you really don’t even have to know how to write any code. I have done Tridium R2, AX and N4 for 18 years. Building automation programming is a desperately understaffed occupation.

Saw this article yesterday and couldn't be more pleased. My son is a sophomore studying Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering at one of the few schools that actually offers this program. The class load is grueling, but he is making it so far. I’m a sales guy, that sells engineers.. tell him to stick it out and dig deep. At 50 he will wake up semi retired and happy with less stress then the 50 year old oil field hand(105 outside, with fleeting joints) or sales guy(trying to grow 20% YOY). Lots of truth to that....most engineers I know retired early or are on the way.

Military and medical are perfect example. I thought the other guy was talking about electric cars. That is what I was referring to at lest. I still think we are a long ways out on that. Also petroleum products are used to make so much more that we use every day, not just fuel.

We are hiring more people now than 20 years ago. Pure barrel produced, you aren’t, even when you add new additional production crews like fracing. Hess, Chevron and Hailburton etc are spending millions on automation and equipment to limit employees. Employees are the number one liability. Think what you want. Drilling etc is about to be all AI

Drilling etc is about to be all AI We literally have three times the workforce we had in 1997 when we started this cracker up. We make about 30% more product now than we did then. Each new cracker that comes online has more and more technology and still requires more manpower than 20 or 30 years ago. O&G doesn't end at the well head.

I understand that, again per “barrel” produced you are less overall man power now then ever before, it’s going to continue to be less. Same way in ever industry,

Per Texas rail road commission Crude Oil Production (Mbbl) 2018 1,274,569 2000- 398,678 30% increase increase in production? That’s 400% You have to go back to the 70’s to match today’s production. Anyway production and down stream are investing a lot of money to limit human liabilities.

I just graduated with a supply chain degree from U of A and I've been working for a little over 3 months now (sorry, haven't been on here in awhile but I'm back now).I can really tell (and I've always known) that having good communication skills and a good personality is huge. There are probably 3 or 4 new hires at my company that are just socially awkward and they really aren't getting anywhere. They may be able to do their jobs, but they can't communicate effectively to upper management to form real relationships. Heck, I'm about to go hunting in Kansas with my boss, my bosses boss, and then his boss Working hard at your job and having a good stand up personality go hand in hand for internal growth I think. Now your not related to or have any prior personal relationships with any of these bosses or their relations do you? Sometimes its what you know, sometimes its how hard you work, and sometimes its who your are/who you know/who your momma and daddy know. I am from Dallas and did not have any connections to this company whatsoever. I went a carrier fair, hit it off with one of the recruiters, and now I’m working in Rogers, AR. I do agree connections are a great thing, but I wanted to learn the whole thing on my own. Didn’t want anything “handed” to me.
