The neighbor (the good one) made a couple of deer blinds (4x8) but had no plan on windows. Heck, I have the wood shop, and a long history of making blind windows, so I made them for one of the blinds. We’ll do the others later. The interesting thing to me was the cost per window. I had never paid any attention to cost before because I used scrap wood and scrounged plexiglass.

The windows are a rectangular frame of 2x4’s that are 12” high and 36” long. It takes one 2x4 per window and the necessary plexiglass. The windows slide open, which I prefer to all-open or all-shut windows. So, bottom line based on what he said he paid was about $4 per 2x4 and $36 per 2’ by 4’ plexiglass sheet. Five 2x4’s and one and 2/3 sheets of plexiglass total up to about $80. That’s about $16 per window, not counting screws and electricity and unused scrap plexiglass.

And then we had beer.

You didn't factor your time. I figure mine at at least $25/hr.

We use a barter system. He and his brother will come over and fill all my feeders for me. I buy the corn. And the brother will probably cook gumbo and tater salad, and the boy can really cook. And I wasn’t doing anything yesterday anyway.

Sounds like a good barter for some good gumbo.

Plus if your retired and had nothing better to do you probably enjoyed making them, I would of.

I priced out some windows too and it cost me more to make than to order from deerview window co. If you have the time and can get cheap material it might be worth it to make your own but I found it easier to just have some made.

Somebody is making your windows for less than $16 each?

a 12" x 10" window is $16.45 from Deerview windows. I bought the 24" x 12" window for $28.40 which I can't make for less than that. I priced the plexiglass and other small parts and it's not worth it,,, to me anyways. the cost is similar or slightly higher than buying them.

I understand. But this guy wanted 12” by 36” windows. I have all the gear and power tools needed, so I just did it for him. I did get some work out of him though.
