Just noticed the "Check Engine" light on my 98 Dodge 1500 , checking I cant find a reason, Drives and sounds great, do the Supply stores freely do a code check ? Don't mind the expense just hate going to a garage for this.

Yes, they normally check for free and reset it but call first. Assume you going to Mineola?

Depending on the code it may take a drive cycle to pop back up. Some can be 50-60 miles, some can be 100s. What was the code?

I have a scanner coming because my wife's Nissan X-Terra has an intermittent vacuum leak. The service writer suggested that that would be the best course being it goes away for one to two weeks after resetting before recurring!
for every stereotype there's a prototype don't be the prototype

The light will turn off after the drive cycle is completed and come on again when there is another event. However, the codes are stored in the computer unless they are cleared by the code reader. Meaning.... The service guy can pull the stored codes even after the light goes off on its own.

The code readers can be bought at the parts stores pretty cheap. I keep one on hand, vehicles throw codes pretty easy especially if they have some age to them and most are not anything major, just fuel/air ratios etc... that set off the computer

I could pull the positive terminal on the battery and wait 20 minutes which will reset it but that's a PIA.
