I was scouting several public hunting sites a was wondering how to request the state to have property owners help the hunters to harvest some birds.

1. Shred the parking area. As dry as it is I’m afraid to park my vehicle in knee to waist high vegetation.
2. Shred or plow some strips in sites that are not grazed down by cattle.
3. State to allow and assist the property owner to control burn the area. (Overgrowth is head high in blood weeds)

Also curious to see the numbers for each site for OSR. If know one is hunting a site then why reallocate the funds again the next year.

After scouting again this year the areas within 2 hours of my residence decided not to purchase a permit this year.

Hancock, great suggestion. It took awhile to find the correct place on the website but sent them an email.

Maybe TPWD or The Army Corp of Engineers should put out a call for civilian volunteers to help improve public hunting areas. Mowing,bulldozing,brush-hogging, small carpentry projects,etc. I know of several areas that would benefit from someone just driving through with a bulldozer with the blade down. Be mindful of erosion issues of course.

Not everybody ises the main oarking areas to hunt public land. You might very well have missed something there.

Like you I opted to not purchase the Annual Hunting Permit this year. I have sent a few emails over the last 3 years expressing my concerns about the poor overall quality of options for the Houston area dove hunter and the fact that the second split of the season is rarely an option for the public hunter.

I do like your idea of analyzing the OSR data. That is a very good idea.

Maybe if enough public hunters emailed the Parks and Wildlife Department then the Department will learn that well mowed hay meadows and fields overgrown to head high with brush are not good dove areas even if the so called biologists have determined that the State should pay the landowner lease fees.

Maybe if we squeak enough the wheel will get greased.

Drove from Crandall to Brownsville Texas on Friday and came back on Saturday. The only significant number of dove observed was in the city limits or near city limits. I guess this where dove surveys are conducted.

Update from email. “ No Response “

Have not heard any shooting around my area where annual hunts are conducted. 3 inches of rain probably on Saturday killed all the water hole hunting. Scouted a lot of sunflower fields in the area this morning before and after church and did not see a hunter. I think the sunflowers are still to green to hold birds.

Any have success on public hunting today?

Not on public but I believe you are correct on the sunflowers being too green. Maybe next Saturday.
