My pup has Congestive Heart Failure and will need to be put down any day in the next 6 months. I am trying to prepare for taking him to vet in the future. My question is if I am out of town with the pup, do I need paperwork showing ownership when I walk in?? Boy is stable today and comfortable, but when his heart further weakens it will be time. I am thankful the drugs have given us a little more time.

I would think that a call to your regular vet should be sufficient. It might be better to call your regular vet first and have them call a local vet and give them a heads up.

You know the first thing that popped into my head was why take a failing dog on the road, but then it came tome. Where else would the pooch want his last sight in life be than in the fields he loved to run through? As far as your question, you may want to take the vets report on his condition. Good luck and I'm sorry to hear about your bud.

There is time, and you must take it, to lay your hand on your dog's head as you walk past him lying on the floor or on his settle, time to talk with him, to remember with him, time to please him, time you can't buy back once he's gone" GBE

. My pup goes pretty much every where I go. With his weakened heart the end will come when his quality of life is not there. This can be any time from now till 6 months. My task is to keep him calm and provide the companionship he is used to. We could be in Paint Rock, Oklahoma, Kansas or any number of places.

I remember my last. I held her as she slipped away and told her that there would be a covey under every bush. Her name was Cookie. [Linked Image]

While we're on the subject, I'll never judge someone for their decision on being or not being present when a pet is put down, or what they decide to do with the carcass. I consider it a very personal decision and one in which they know what is best for them.

I still have my wife's ashes. I plan to bury them with Muffin when she dies.

I agree. I'm not about to let my little buddy pass away surrounded by strangers.

I had to lay my Pointer down right after Memorial Day.
Very tough.

I wish you my best.

I do not know your circumstances, but 5 years ago my wife's Chihuahua was diagnosed with congestive heart failure. I didn't really believe it, so I thinned her down, got her outside more and was much more careful what she ate. She is still kicking at 12 years old and is much healthier overall than she was 5 years ago. You might consider a second opinion unless your pretty satisfied that the diagnosis is correct.

My dog lived for 4 years with congestive heart failure. When it was time, it was very hard to do, but it was the right thing. Try to be the last appointment of the day, if possible, less people to watch you bawl. Stay in the room with the dog.

If your pup is not already on Vetmedin, you may want to ask about it. It's about $50/ bottle (online it's $31), but it really helped Preema the last 3 years of her 17 years. Her son, Cookies, will go on it soon as he now has the same condition.

So sorry. A very difficult time indeed. I am lucky to have Dr. Stucky in Whitesboro. He has been very caring and compassionate when it has come to that time for my dogs.

I had a similar experience with Cracker. She went completely off her food. She stumbled getting out of her dog box. I started scraping off the grass to dig a little hole to bury her. I simply could not have it done. She finally went into complete remission. She went off her food a couple more time but seems to now be in total remission.

Condolences hurts to much when mine dies. I plan to keep it to myself when these two go.

Thanks Mike, I have had every test done and was not satisfied with a XRay so we did a eco with internal medicine. The valve on his left side is not functioning correct and his right side is enlarged and is not contracting to pump the blood to his body. I spent Thursday evening reading about DCM in Doberman Pinchers. I had two vets who looked at him tell me he could make it for now to absolute best case 6 months. I am comfortable with the diagnosis and consider this dog hospice. In his specific case his heart is weakened and will not recover, and will worsen. Basically he is alive with 4 drugs to keep the fluid out of his chest and push the heart to pump harder. I am comfortable with the diagnosis, but like any pet owner I struggle with the reality.
