No dude. That's the weird thing - although there's lots of Austin dweebs, everybody's used to seeing camo, like, everywhere.

Honestly, I don't think a drag queen would get a second look in that town now. bolt When I was first drug to it as a kid, German was the predominant language on Main Street.

Opening week of deer season you will see plenty of camo wearing people in town. Like others have said there are lots of deer in that country and quite a few Axis deer in places. if you get the chance to get and Axis do it, they are fantastic table fare.

Fredericksburg was really special when I was 10. circa 1970. Luckenbach even more so. Guitch Cooke had taken over from Hondo Crouch, and was running the Lubach. store, post office and dance hall, etc. Pop. 23. Used to go in there for some jerky and "Iron Brew" sodee pop. Guitch always said, " son, be careful with that IB, it'll put hair on yer chest. But dang, I never thought it would give me a back carpet and unibrow!!!

Anyone remember the baby coffins displayed in the old store?

The best places to eat will have plenty of lifted pickups out front, so those places will be hunter friendly, and not caring how you smell.

Once i learned that i didn't "NEED" to kill something, and that if i did kill something all the fun stopped and work began, i was a much better hunter.

We have a couple of deer around, and I reckon since you're a vet we will TRY to overlook the cali thing, lol. You will like it around here. As said before the deer are not large but we hit more deer with our vehicles than most hunters ever see. Thank you for you service and hope you get a chance to hunt.

The Fredericksburg Standard (local newspaper) had a letter to the editor a few weeks ago about the local restaurants should be offering no straws or paper straws. The character of the town is changing with the influx of the "characters" coming in. So sad. When I grew up there, it was the greatest place in the world. Summers were spent with a .22 in one hand and a rod and reel in the other. Luckenbach was a place you traded eggs for groceries. Guns in every vehicle in the school parking lot windows down. Nothing ever stolen and no one ever shot. All of this has changed. It's still a great little town. People are friendly and helpful, But, I digress. My suggestion is to download a copy of the hunting rules from the Texas Parks and Wildlife internet site and become familiar with them. The Game Wardens are nice guys but they don't bend. Good luck on your hunt, enjoy your visit and thank you for your service. If you can squeeze in a visit to Enchanted Rock, you won't be disappointed. Cross Roads on Main Street has good steaks.

What part of Gillespie County will you be hunting?

Austinites have to dominate. There's something missing in their lives, so they have to try and control yours. And they want to be "characters", but they're posers. 'Have been for years now. I too knew Luckenbach before Hondo and Geech bought it and began the attention whoring. Nothing lasts forever.

And... welcome

I was just a boy, but yes, we stopped by there several times on the way to our place at Grapetown. I do wish I could taste an Iron Brew again. The Coca-cola plant in Fredericksburg made it I think.

You didn't like Orange Crush better than Iron Brew? You still have the place in Grapetown?

'Sold mine in early spring of this year. Too many Harleys and wine nuts. A neighbor threw a tacky huge metal barn up to get in the wine business (like every other Tom, Dick, and Harry), 200 yards from the front porch of my brother's place and an eyesore in the view from our place. We had the old Enderlin and Haufler places. It was time for us to move on. Enderlin fought against Poncho Villa and before that he met Lincoln in a hospital tent, can't remember which battle though. Fathered 13 kids, but took off for a few years during the California gold rush. Now THAT'S a character.

Sorry Creekrunner, I'm new at this and probably don't know what I'm doing yet. I am your neighbor to the east of your brother's place. Interesting history on old man Enderlin. Where did you get that information on him? I had never heard those stories.

oldrancher, creekrunner and stub, thank you very much. Yes, I will be pouring over the rules and regulations. I'll probably keep a hard copy of key rules in my truck when we come out there. I actually got a response from the land owner. Apparently, his mother in law is the boss and she calls the shots for the ranch, so he's going to pass on my info. I hope to hear from her within the next couple weeks. I know I'm talking about next season, but for me and my friends to do this, we'll need as much advance notice as possible so that we figure out a way to scout the area (or have someone local scout it for us), and schedule our So Cal hunts around our TX trip. Honestly, it sounds amazing and I am willing to give up at least one of my local hunts for this trip. Can't wait.

The ranch is apparently in Fredericksburg. Not sure where or the name...I'm waiting to hear from the MIL...errr, the boss lady!

I like the area around willow city myself....lots of granite outcrops and views for miles.

Really neat area.

The area south of Fred is a lot of bottom type county. Lots more fertile with gently rolling terrain. Lots of axis in that type country

Would love a shot at axis. Out of curiosity, are there issues with axis deer overrunning the area?

I wouldn't say over-running but they are in certain areas in enough numbers that if you wanted to hold out for one the odds are def. in your favor

The Axis are plentiful in the Stonewall area. They probably outnumber the whitetails now. They have migrated up the tributaries of the Pedernales River and have herds established through out Gillespie County. They used to be a novelty and were at first protected by land owners. Now, they have become a PIA to farmers and ranchers because they travel in herds and compete aggressively with area livestock and whitetails. You can fence out your livestock but you can't fence out the Axis unless you put up an 8 foot fence. They will clear that if pushed or try to go through it. They can decimate a hay field in no time and love Klein Grass fields. Ask me how I know. There are land owners that will let you hunt them for a nominal fee ($200/doe) or free. Inquire at the local area feed stores. They will probably know someone they can refer you to. These type of hunts are not a business like a deer lease. No amenities. Nothing. You sit on the edge of a field where the Axis come in. You shoot, you gut, you load, you pay and you leave. The land owners just want the Axis numbers reduced. This type of activity normally is after deer season to September 1. No, do not contact me for names and phone numbers of these land owners because I will not give them to you. You will have to do your own legwork and no I do not do this on my land.
