My dad will be 77 this month. His stand is a fort/deer stand that we made from scraps. And I mean scraps. But he loves it. The ladder going up is rough on him. Knee replacement and another knee that needs replaced. So I want to build stairs going up. Its roughly 8ft off the ground. I need ideas on how to start the process. Can the THF spare any of their knowledge? I want it to be HD. Thanks.

get an exact measurement from bottom of door to ground and I can diagram how to cut stair stringers. will end up with about 12" treads and approx. 8" risers.

need a good skilsaw, handsaw and pr. of sawhorses.

be sure the ground in front of the door, about 6-10' out and 4' wide is flat and pretty level, if you can put a small sacrete pad there even better.

will take 2 - treated 2x12 for stringers and 5/4 treated deck boards for steps and risers.

stairs are sorta labor intensive but not all that hard to do if you have the method.

I did these for the previous owners kids for a zip line, same way.

I was going to suggest what KWood_TSU posted. Or you may even find some stairs, wood or metal, on craigslist or something also.

I built a ships ladder on my 10' instead of buying the stringers. I built it out of 2x6 treated lumber so it is sturdier and cost less. I made the step tread with 2-2x6's for more foot width and built a full handrail on one side. I also added a porch off the blind door so I would have something to stand on to open the door. Google How to build a ships ladder and you will get videos and plans for DIY

Craigslist. I've seen those portable staircases like they use at HD or warehouses.

hopalong, I got the measurement for my staircase today. Its 90" from top to bottom. Am I correct in saying that I will need 13 steps? The longest 2X12 I can get is 16'. Will that be enough? Thanks.
If I do get those I am going to have to cut in half to put in my truck.
Thanks Eric

ok. another question. I am going to have to put 2 2X12 together. End to end. Any professional way to make it solid?

Thanks guys for all the suggestion. The direction's on the internet made the stairs way to long for my liking. So I just read all could read about building stars and threw in my know how's and built them. The hardest thing I found was getting the rise and run correct and cutting them out correctly. I only used and 8ft 2X12. So its a little steep. My dad was there the whole time and threw in some tidbits and they came out to his satisfaction. Plus the dam dogs can climb them, so they are good for what he needs them for. Lots more years dad. I guess I will post pics this coming weekend. I was way too sweaty to hold anything electronic
