Up'n my game. Just got this Minn Kota Endura 36 inch 55lb 12v trolling motor as a back up motor to get me home if my mud motor fails. Last year had a close call, way up this creek, about 5 or 6 miles from ramp, go under some branches, runs across my motor busts my fule pump...I was able to macgyver it back together with zp ties electrical tape thank goodness...Probably take it for a test run next weekend se how she runs.. Its gonna take up some valuble real estate in my center bench. I might be able to cut down the shaft make it more compact, and I might need to anyway, that long of shaft is not needed, but the shortest they have at 55 lb thrust 12v. Might be able to stow it under the deck here above the gas tank and batteries...This would be great, then I get my center bench back..

Testing is very dangerous and since your a THF celebrity,we can't risk that. I'll be by to pick it up and test it in Texas and Kansas. Should have all the kinks worked out for the conservation order season.

1 gallon gas can w a petcock on it, sit it on top of your motor duck tape it in place, fuel will gravity feed. It ll get u home. I carry a spare electric edelbrock 4 to 7 psi fuel pump and a spare fuel filter in my tool bag.

I'd look for a back up too if I had a Mud Buddy....... Now that is out of the way, good idea as if you run them long enough you will have a failure a long ways from assistance. From my experience on Thanksgiving morning about 12 miles from a ramp.

From my experience on Thanksgiving morning about 12 miles from a ramp. Not sure Mudbuddy has a lot to do with it, put 500 hours on "x" brand and let me know how trouble free your motor is. When you run stump fields, sand, and silt the way these are intended to run, and not idling around, stuff is going to break. I have seen a lot of failures over the years and mostly motor failures which has nothing to do with one brand over another. Stuff happens when you run these in zero degrees to 100 degree temps. Blown motors, dropping valves, rods bending, lobes on cams flattening out, lack of power from heads leaking, broken exhaust manifolds, leaking main head gaskets on every motor with more than 100 hours on them, all this has nothing to do with a certain mud motor company. You better know how to turn a wrench on the water or your going to get stuck, its not if but when. Happened to me 4 times last year in two different rigs. Blown motor, clutch switch broke, Kill switch button broke, and clutch went out. Two of these items were easy fixes on the water but two were not. Some failures are the mud motor company issues but to me I do not see it a problem that my clutch, trim unit, and switch failed at 450 hours of very hard use. They will all fail at some point due to abuse. Just my 2 cents.

Go to an electric pump if u wanta get away from fuel pump issues. And carry a spare in case the electric one craps out. Pulse pumps can blow the diaphragm if the engine backfires, and then well, your stuck or you can use a 1 gallon save yourself can like I posted above. I'm turning wrenches this am working on my mudmotor it went down to one cylinder. Thankfully it was before the season started. All these motors will break, it's a given. When they perform and get you where your going, well that's what hooks you.

Go to an electric pump if u wanta get away from fuel pump issues. And carry a spare in case the electric one craps out. I don’t have fuel pump issues. My fuel pump didn’t fail, going under some branches in a creek, the branches raked across my motor and snapped off the plastic male connector that inserts into the rubber hose that connects to the carb. But I don’t need to worry about any of this now, tools, spare parts, etc...I got my “get home” solution. I’ll probably carry a lot less tools in my boat as well, I bet I currently carry about 50lbs of tools now, I don’t need all that now. Motor weights about 25 lbs, but I lose 50 lbs in tools, weight wise I’m in better shape. I always carried a spare back up battery, got stuck with dead battery once learned my lesson there.

Last season I was on a road trip, water leaked into my lower unit bell housing and I was worried it might have damaged my belt or clutch, I almost turned around and came home. But risked it and went out anyway, I was the only one on the lake, so it had me worried. My motor has over 250 hours on it, I was planning on buying a new motor for this season, for the reliability. But this is a much better solution, even a new motor can fail.
I used to tell mohunter about “preventive” maintenance I wanted to do, like replacing my clutch. He said “oh just wait till it breaks”, well I can do that now.

I'm thinkin' 2 spring type clips to hold the troller under the deck and above the tank and batteries...maybe 2 more on a board to clamp on the transom for an manually "adjustable" trolling motor depth ? Maybe mount the clamps to the board, then be able to position the board diagonally across the transom, to get the right prop depth, and then some sort of bracket to hold up under the deck when not needed?

I might brake down and put one in my gun box. I have plenty of room in my boat for such things. At the same time though a spare trolling motor would not do me any good in some of the places we hunt. Long rides in winds....that thing wouldn't stand a chance. The best backup is a good buddy you can call on if the problem cannot be fixed on the water. I'll keep your number handy Guy

Thing is, your buddy could be out of town, or at work, or miles/hours from you. I was looking at these motors. Just too expensive. But I try to avoid long rides in the wind, so thing my motor work fine. https://www.torqeedo.com/us/en-us/products/outboards/travel

Blown head gasket on my starboard side. One trip across dallas to the briggs warehouse got the parts. I'm back up and running again. It's crazy hot outside. May take the kids fishing later or let the dogs fetch the decoy at the lake.

You could just get a paddle like everyone else, no need to worry about carrying extra weight and battery, they always work. Trust me I should know I used for for a couple of hours last season but made it back to shore.

Back up plans are wise. I had brush tear up more things on a motor than I care to recall. Dipstick got pulled from the motor, never found it. Fuel lines yanked off. Kill switch cord grabs everything. I keep a bright orange plastic storage box that has flares for signaling, starting a fire, There is a spare knife. First aid kit. Whistles. High protein energy bars with good carbs. Most used, basic tools.
So far as a fuel pump failing on a mud motor. Give your fuel line extra footage and add the primer bulb low to the floor. in case of failure you can step on the primer bulb repeatedly, using it as a pump to get home.

I've used my primer bulb on my outboard to suck the last few drops out of the tank. Long story I got a bulb. When limbs raked across my motor and busted my fuel pump, I didn’t know what happened, my motor just died. I tried starting it again, it started but then died. At first I thought I just ran out of gas, check my tank, had gas. Gave a few pumps on the bulb, squirted gas all over my motor, smoked like crazy, I’m lucky motor did not catch fire.
