For You guys that plant, do you have cows on the place?

Do you fence them out or over plant? I would think it would take a lot not to have cows decimate a plot

Yes, but I can rotate to pastures that do not have the food plots in them. If you have cows they will camp on the food plots after the first hard freeze IME. If they fields are big enough to allow the deer to have room away from the cattle you will be okay. But if you have smaller plots up 10 acres of less then the cattle can keep the deer off the plots IME. The other issue will be getting a shot off with cattle in the background or in front of the deer.
If your plots are smaller then I would put up a temporary electric fence to keep cattle off and deer to get in. Plant the plot and put up the fence the same day so the cattle will get used to it. Keep the fence about 4'-5' away from the edge of the plot so the cattle can reach the plot. If you can keep the fence 8'10' minimum away from the edge of the trees/brush so the deer have room to avoid it if they are spooked. That will keep them from knocking it over. 2 wire electric(one at 20"-24" and top one at 36"-42") should keep most cattle off and allow deer to go under or over it. They make some Solar Powered chargers that are not that expensive and you can reuse all the fence materials over several years. Good corners and step in electric fence posts make it quick to build a fence on smaller plots. Good grounding system is key to any electric fence working good or failing.

If you plant a plot and can't / don't keep the cows off (either by fence or putting in a different pasture) all you did was plant a plot to feed the cows.

We put up a loose 5 strand barbwire fence around our plot.

I only plant about 10 acres, but I have it fenced to keep the cows out. Then about thanksgiving weekend, i let the cows in.
