The new report tonight had a story about an algae bloom that had killed several dogs this year. Be careful where you take the pooches swimming. I hate reading about pups dying
There is time, and you must take it, to lay your hand on your dog's head as you walk past him lying on the floor or on his settle, time to talk with him, to remember with him, time to please him, time you can't buy back once he's gone" GBE

Saw this a day or two ago, and did a little Googling, but I did not have much luck on real info.
I'm 57 and I've been chasing bird dogs through the Texas Mesquite, cactus, and ceders since before I was old enough to carry a shotgun. Stock tanks, small lakes, mud holes, cattle troughs. oxbows, and creeks....I watched bird dogs drink and cool off in some pretty nasty water. I've never heard algae blooms mentioned in stagnant water mentioned before this weekend.
Is this a legit concern for dogs in our part of the world? Anyone have first hand knowledge of a dog getting serious sick or someone loosing a dog from bad water?
I always carry water for the dogs, but they gonna drink where they want....
We all need to practice Whoa more.

Know someone that got a new pup, was healthy for 6 months and then had an issue with algae and/or bacteria. Lost half its body weight, been to the animal hospital a bunch, and still hasn't "recovered" after 4 months.

In this heat, keep dogs out of stagnant water, even on lakes. You should also keep yourself out of this water.

If the water looks as if it has blue and green paint floating on the surface, the last report I saw has that as the blue green algae. Lady in GA lost three dogs at the same time. Took less than a few hours.
