I recently turned 65 and am on Medicare Part A and B. I am looking for a Medicare supplement plan and prescription plan. Seeking a recommendation on a good company to go with. Also, approximate cost of a plan G and cost of a prescription plan. Do they bill monthly or yearly?

I just turned 65 in June. My plan G is 118.00 per month. My prescription plan is 10.50 per month. I had a local guy with Mutual of Omaha. I think he did me right.

It pays the 20% that Medicare doesn't pay. It was much cheaper than the policy I had, being self employed.

I just do not see that 20%. My hospital stay for gall bladder surgery was all paid for. Doctor visits are also paid for unless I see a specialist.

I was under the impression that Medicare only pays 80% and that a plan G would take care of the other 20% minus the Part B deductible.

I do not know all the details. Sometimes we get hit with paying towards an annual deductible but so far only on shingles and pneumonia shots.
After my emergency gall bladder thing (two ambulance rides, two hospitals and surgery), mama said it was great insurance because all the bills were 100% covered and paid. Much better than the best work policy I ever had.

That is who we got a plan through for my Mother. took an independent insurance guy that we knew a list of her meds and he elected a plan to cover all those plus good coverage through the hole and such. that policy cost a little but paid everything including co-pays. It was a great deal. I am looking at another year before mine can kick in so will be crossing that road soon enough

Medicare.gov has an interactive page to help you compare and sign up for plans. You will need to build a RX list. The page will estmate your annual costs. Coverage available varies by zip codes.

I rep all the carriers. A male t65 can get coverage in Texas right at 100$ a month for plan G. A little cheaper if you have are married by means of a household discount.

Just buyer beware, some of the plans are crap as far as access to specialists and their networks can be really small. From the doctor side of things, these plans typically suck as far as payments for services, so we don't take many of them. While everything may sound all good and happy when you are well, when you need care and can't get it, then the rooster comes to roost.
As I tell my parents, "your plan sucks from my side of things, but for you it is good. Just hope you don't get sick". They get it, but still want what's best for them, and I get that too.

Makes me mad. I've had my doctors for years. They are starting to tell me when I retire, I have find a doctor that accepts Medicare as they don't.

Dry fire, get ready for the new healthcare of the US. As a doctor, our reimbursements are set to whatever CMS (medicare) decides we get paid for our services. Commerical insurances then make a determination they will pay equal to, more, or less than medicare. Most medicare advantage plans pay less (some way less) and have a hard time keeping doctors on their panels. Some insurances pay slightly more, but none anymore pay significantly more.
CMS recently took one of my bread and butter proceudres, cataract surgery, and decided to cut payment 15% (on top of the 15% they cut in 2013). This while adding costs for administrative stuff they want us to do just to stay in business and not make more penalties from them. It isn't long before they will run every doctor out of medicare and no one will have coverage.
The concept of "medicare for all" the democrats are championing right now would be a disaster for health care, since it would absolutely result in reduced fees and less doctors participating in the system, so wait times would be terrible, service would stink, and you would deal with bad doctors with bad bedside manner. Great situation to be in right?
As doctors, we know the ship is sinking, and we know there has to be a better way, but we are not allowed to even talk about pricing or working together lest we face anti-stark laws, collusion claims by the US govt, and lose our ability to do what we do. Its a racket, all the while we are bent over a barrel with no bargaining ability to go against the biggest monopoly of all, CMS/medicare and the insurance industry.

I agree.......we all better get down on our knees and pray there is no Medicare for All or our healthcare system as we know it is doomed.......the current state of what Medicare pays in unacceptable for the costs providers have before they make a profit. A surgeon that stands on his feet for a 14 hour hip replacement surgery is only paid $140 an hour!!!!!!!!!!!!!

if your surgeon is taking 14 hours to do a hip replacement, I would find another doctor. But that's the problem, there might be times when a hip replacement does take 14 hours and the reimbursement is the same as a 2 hour hip replacement and there is no way to legally make that difference up for the doc.
Listen I am not saying doctors are going broke, but our costs of doing business are going up every year by quite a bit, while our payments are getting cut every year. It isn't a financially solvent situation. There will be a time in the future where getting a good doctor to take care of you will require going outside the insurance system and paying cash. For those that have the money great. But those who are stuck in the system for healthcare will suffer. Two tier system is in the not so distant future. We are essentially starting this with Medicaid and all other insurances, but it will become insurance or cash. mark my words, if you are living in 20 years you will see this happen. Might be sooner, but it will eventually happen because the medicare money is running out and with all other insurances tied to medicare payments, the cuts will continue and doctors just can't stay in business making no money.

My advice to anyone considering a medicare advantage plan is to run away far and fast. Stick to traditional medicare and then get a supplemental plan that fits your needs (if you even need one).

Not my surgeon, a client of mine is a surgical nurse and she shared with me what the surgeon got payed for that operation. I am not trying to pick a fight, but surgical nurses typically don't know squat about what a doctor gets "paid" for any type of surgery. They may have an idea of what gets billed, but the reimbursement is piddlin compared to billed, esp on the bigger hospital based codes like a hip replacement. So unless the doctor specifically shared with this nurse, anything said is pure speculation. I know from people in the industry that reimbursement for a hip replacement is less than what you quoted, a surgeon taking 14 hours to do a hip would typically be getting somewhere around 65-70 dollars an hour. But I stand by my claim that a surgeon doing a routine hip in 14 hours is a hack and shouldn't be doing them in the first place. A typical hip should be a 90-120 minute surgery. so you can do the math of what is actually paid vs billed.
