HARLINGEN — Valley sportsmen and women in the hunt to take big game can now apply for permits for the fall season and hunts for exotics next year at two area wildlife refuges.
Texas Parks and Wildlife Department handles applications for Laguna Atascosa and the Lower Rio Grande Valley refuges, where permit holders can take white-tailed deer, nilgai antelope and feral hogs.
In all, more than 9,000 permits will be issued this year by TPWD for hunts on both public and private lands across Texas. Other big game animals available at sites outside the Valley include mule deer, pronghorn antelope, turkey, alligator, exotic gemsbok and scimitar-horned oryx.

I hope to make it back out to Laguna Atascosa for Nilgai. Such as a beautiful landscape.

Dude, your camera mount creeps me out. I've been sitting in a spot just like your setup and have had a 6' diamondback crawl across my boots! It didn't creep me out real bad as getting to the place I had to move down a canal bank, one of the many ditches that funnel water on the Refuge, and came nose to nose down with a 12' gator. He was huge and had his mouth fully extended, waiting for me to blunder into him, but I move like a snail in that country. After about a three-minute standoff (felt like three-hours), I saw a ribbonfish go shooting down the canal, and he launched after it so fast it was like it was never on the bank. When I got back to the house, my wife said: "how did it go?". I responded, "Great!"

I have a rule of thumb for these "ditches" having hunted the Refuge in some very dry years. A ditch's depth is about twice that of its width. Be very careful with them, don't jump the narrow ones unless there is an ant bed scar or bare ground on both sides (you got to get back).

One year, I had thought about wading across a 9' ditch, but decided against it because of my RoT. Next year, the same ditch was dry and was at least 18' deep!

Glad I'm not the only one who noticed the scope stand! Needed a double take on it.

I have drawn the last two years, this past season was bow/deer/unlimited exotics and I had to turn it down. It is an interesting place, not my favorite but i'll hunt any place i can and enjoy it. Hoping to draw with it with my wife and kids in the future.

It was really dry when i was there and never saw any nilgai. Lots of deer.
