I'm surprised that nobody has started a reloading thread on 300 Ham'r ?

Shot a good couple of good boars last night, both +/-200#

I used one of the boars this am to do more "redneck" terminal performance bullet testing, by shooting though the chest cavity of the hog into water for bullet recovery.

Specifics of this test:

Speer 150gr Gold Dot #308150BLKGDB

Impact velocity +/- 2200fps, 14.7" barrel, 2260fps MV, shot from 30yds

Penetration of the 3 recovered bullets was 20-22", but the first round I shot went through the hog and 2 gallons of water for penetration of 28"+ !!! I was actually surprised at how much penetration I got, it's close to the same as the std 150gr Fusion/Gold Dot.

Retained weight 136gr-142gr, the 136gr bullet appeared to have hit quite a bit of bone.

Overall I'm pretty impressed with this bullet's performance and think it will be one of the better loads.

I got some range time and hunted with my 300 HAMR this weekend. It’s likes the 130gr HC ammo and it worked great on this boar.

I have both .308 and 300 HAM'R and I enjoy shooting both. However, this deer season I'll be carrying a 300 HAM'R the same as I did last season. I live in the mountains and any weight difference matters when you're carrying it up and down all day. Yes, I have a Wilson AR, but I also have a couple that I have built myself using WC 300 HAM'R barrels and they cost less than the AR-10s I have built.
If you don't "build your own" any gunsmith should be willing to change out the barrel on a AR-15 for you for next to nothing. It isn't a high cost job. Most of the shots I take are between 50 and 100 yards and in 32 years of hunting on my property I have had only one shot past 200 yards.
There is no "this is better than that" between the .308 and the 300 HAM'R. It is just a matter of which is better for the situation at any given time.

Many forum folks lost their $%#* when Bill Wilson stated the 300 HAM'R could approach 308 performance. But they really took that comment out of context. For example, comparing the Hornady Custom factory ammunition in 308 w/ 150SST (BC .415) vs. the Savage 150SST bullet the HAM'R uses (BC .370), and taking into account the actual muzzle velocity of that load in an 18-inch 308 barrel (2650-2700 fps), ballistically laugh speaking you'll find you are basically losing 200-220 yards effective range when using the 18-inch HAM'R. So whatever range you were comfortable harvesting game at with an 18-inch 308, just take off 200-220 yards and consider yourself with the same performance.
The minimum effective terminal velocity for the 150SST is approx. 1850 fps, which puts the 300 HAM'R's reasonable range for this load at around 200 yards. Like the poster above, most folks aren't shooting farther than 200 anyway. And according to data on WC website, you only loose 20 fps going to the 16.25" barrel, which is what I run in a 5.3 lb AR-15. Funny, my 308 upper alone weighs 5 lbs!
I just ordered a .308 POF Revolution DI which comes in at 6.8 lbs but still it remains to be seen what type of recoil it will produce in the smaller frame. And if you carry your rifle for long distances, you know what they say about pounds and pain.

From the WC web site:

"The 300 HAM’R® was developed for optimal terminal performance and offers near .308 Winchester effectiveness, amazing accuracy and low recoil in the lightweight and compact WC15 platform."

I still stand firmly behind this statement that the 300 HAM'R offers near .308 Win terminal performance. I've now cleanly killed well over 700 hogs, 22 whitetail deer, 1 Elk bull, 1 Waterbuck bull, 1 Oryx bull and 1 Addax bull. At the 200yds or less distance that I personally shoot game I have seen no difference in how well the 300 HAM'R kills compared to a .308 Win which I also have a lot of kills with. Obviously the .308 has a range advantage and also the fact you can shoot heavier than 150gr bullets is an advantage. However you pay for this with more weight and bulk. A suppressed 300 HAM'R still weighs less than a unsuppressed .308 of the same barrel length and is about the same overall length if the .308 has a flash hider.

But with our most modern pressure tested data the 300 HAM'R is no slouch in regards to trajectory.

150gr Speer Gold Dot at 2300fps and a 175yd zero

100yds +1.8" 2139fps, 1523fp
150yds +1.1" 2060fps, 1414fp
200yds -1.6" 1984fps, 1311fp
250yds -6.5" 1909fps, 1214fp
300yds -13.8" 1836fps, 1123fp

Gel testing and recovered bullets have already proven that this bullet will expand to 1/2" at a impact velocity of 1820fps and penetrate 22"+

Source for trajectory data was the Hornady ballistic calculator

I'm leaving for South Africa in the am for a 12 day hunt and will be shooting several tough African animals with the 300 HAM'R so I guess we'll see how it performs???

I don't do Facebook, but if you watch Milky Creek Safaris (Martin Booysen) I'm sure he will be posting.

So based on your ballistics above this statement, that expansion/penetration performance is in excess of 300 yards. That BC seems really high for a 150 grain pill. It's still achieving a 1000 ft/lbs at 375 yards. The more I read here the more I realize I need to load my own ammo. I don't suppose that round will show up as factory custom on your website anytime soon?

Source for the BC was the Speer web site. Those bullets have a boron nitride coating, I don't know if that has a effect on BC???

We plan to load this bullet without the coating to 2300fps and have bullets on order

The boron nitride won’t effect BC, at least not to any discernible degree.

yes, I have made 3-4 trips to range and am getting consistent groups of 1 inch or less. Daniel

i'd like to take credit for the tumblers but OinK is shooting with the white crosshairs. i did, however, teach him everything he knows about shooting.

speaking of shooting, bwana already got a sabertooth pig.

"Shot this old boar 10min after checking zero on my rifles! 140yd shot, 150gr Bonded, full penetraion with a quartering shot, DRT... hit him where the neck meets shoulder, exit was behind the far shoulder

watching Kudu cows from a blind now"

Bill today in Africa, OK so not the 300 HAM'R, but the Wilson Combat 358 Win, it's definitely a hammer, gotta love Sables.

'39" Sable bull, .358 Win, 200gr TTSX, quartering away, 175yds, in behind the shoulder, out the neck which was completely broken, DRT'
