Me and my son had one hell of a day offshore with Dolphin Dock out of Port Aransas. It was originally an 8-hour red snapper trip, but we got to the pipeline in 2 hours, and got our boat's limit of snapper in 30 minutes. That gave us a ton of time to get some bonus fish. I was afraid that we'd troll for kingfish, which is a fun fight, but I've already caught a bunch of nice kings, and they're just not that appealing to me when the ocean is full of trophy species that I've never caught. Well, Captain Timmy made a few calls on the radio and found a few of his buddies that were dragging shrimp nets about 40 miles offshore. He made an announcement over the speakers and said that we were going to make a risky move to fish behind the shrimp boats. It was a longshot, but if everything worked out just right, we could get into a school of blackfin tuna. All 20 of the fishermen onboard were excited as hell to get the opportunity. We pulled in behind the first shrimp rig about 30 minutes after the Capt. made the call, and the fish were in a frenzy. Unfortunately, they were mostly bonita (a tuna relative that's not good to eat). We caught a bunch of those and my son got his arms stretched out a few times. It was fun, but not anything I would make a super-long, epic THF post about. We reeled up and headed to the second shrimp rig. I could tell right away that there was much more action on the surface. A couple of big pods of dolphins were doing gymnastics right in front of the bow. I could see huge schools of bonita streaking like laser beams at the critters that were getting stirred up by the big shrimp nets. We pulled in close to the nets and immediately saw sharks everywhere. Mostly smaller spinners and dusky sharks, but two HUGE tiger sharks swam within spitting distance of me and my son. We were in shock at the sight. Amid all the green streaks from the charging bonita, and the big murky shadows from the sharks, we were occasionally catching a glimpse of a black missle, about 3x to 4x bigger than the bonia andntwice as fast. I tossed out a weightless sardine and watched it sink a few feet into the green water. A black missle shot on my bait and my drag immediately screamed. A deckhand named Llano was instantly over my right shoulder. "What color was it? Is it a shark?" No Llano, it was as a black torpedo. "That's a tuna, brother! It's about to be a cluster$@^#, but don't let it get away. Just tell everyone to get the hell out of the way and head to the back of the boat!" The next 2 hours were exactly what Llano predicted. I massive cluster$&%^, and one of the best days of my life. Me and my son both demolished our biceps on blackfins and sharks until Captain Tim called it quits. Pics of my best day ever with my mini-me.
Haha yea I polished that thing for hours.

Awesome! There's nothing like fishing behind dragging shrimp boats.

Tiger wanted me to make sure y'all saw his biggest tuna got hammered by a dusky shark fight at the boat. Llano snagged it with the gaff right before another 10+ sharks rared up on it.
Haha yea I polished that thing for hours.

It has been over 30 years since I went out of Dolphin Docks on one of their 60 hour trips. Some of the best fishing ever. Drifting behind shrimp boats when there was no limit on sharks. Night anchoring close to the oil derricks and staying up all night catching amberjack, which had no limit either. But we never caught a tuna.

I guess I need to get down there. I am out of fish in the freezer. Looks like a great trip.

Awesome trip! Bonita is not on my list of fish to eat, either. Now that y’all caught the tuna bug, y’all head down to Venice and get on some yellowfin.

Nice haul! They caught some big yellowfin back in the spring. Either Dolphin Dock or one of the other ones, I can't remember.

Bonita is good eating. Its dark and strong, its almost like eating a steak, but its good. When I went off shore we used Bonita as cut bait when we caught it, the outfitter told us they taste like crap. Maybe next time I will have to try it.

I've never gotten into the tuna. Would love some of that action. What kind of shark is that?
