Last year I bought a hunt at a charity gala for 2 to the Limpopo region of South Africa. Me and the wife were booked for 2 Nyala and whatever else we could find, wife wanted a Kudu and I Gemsbok, Impala, Waterbuck, and maybe a Bushbuck or Zebra.

Well after 11 months of prep the day finally came, and it has already been interesting.

After packing, re-packing, dealing with a rifle that didn’t want to shoot the ammo I bought, we got ready for the flight.

My wife, who is a experienced traveler and loves planes, started feeling apprehensive about the trip last week.

Friday evening, she loses it. Starts crying and saying she can’t go. We mutually agree she is gonna stay, tell the kids and plan on taking me to the airport the next morning. I re -arrange some bags and mentally prepare to make the trip myself.

Well, we load up my stuff and after dropping the kids off she decides she would regret if she didn’t go so we rush back to the house, grab her bags and head for Bush Intercontinental in Houston.

We would have made it in plenty of time, but there was a construction delay on 10 right before the Brazos river bridge that had us at damn near a standstill for 1 1/2 hours.

We get thru and race to the airport, hand the keys to a valet and run inside.

We get to check in and Plane is close to boarding so a rep for Qatar airways takes us, makes sure we have all the correct documents, checks our bags, runs us thru TSA and off to our terminal.

After some additional security measures we are on the plane.

Flight was long but did get to see some amazing things. Cape cod at night is gorgeous and I couldn’t help wondering what giant sharks were swimming off the coast of montauk.

Crossed the Atlantic and awoke to a sunrise about 1am our time. Got to see the coast of Turkey along the Black Sea and the snow capped peaks of Iraq and Iran before landing in Doha, Qatar after a 15 hour flight.

We chose Doha and Qatar airways not only because of price, but logistically it made the most sense for our arrival time in Johannesburg. I’ve been thoroughly impressed with both the airline and the airport...it’s incredible.

Everyone we have met so far has been super nice and very accommodating.

Trying to load pictures but include having difficulty doing so. I’ll try to a bit later before our plane takes off.

Cool pics! It's awesome that your wife decided to go at the last minute. I have absolutely no doubt she would have regretted that decision for the rest of her life.

Doha is a very cool city. The market has been around for 100s of years and if you play your cards right you can get some great deals. The Arabic museum there is pretty cool too.

Some pics from Doha airport. It was more like a Marriott resort with a few terminals.

Currently 39’000’ over Saudi Arabia en route to Jo’burg reading a Ruark novel and enjoying a scotch.

I’m sure Bob would have approved

We both believe it’s a spiritual attack on her. She loves to fly and when we met she would get on a plane just to ride around.

We went to Vegas a few weeks back for 2 days and she didn’t want to get on the plane then. Last week she flew to DC to support a friend who has published a Christian therapy book and she had it hit her again.

I’m proud of her. It took a lot of tears and some meds but she didn’t let fear be a tool that could be used against her and she boarded the plane.

Some great pictures! I can't wait to see the pictures from the hunt. Could be an aweful lot of us living vicariously through you right now, thanks for sharing with us.

Just finished up our second day.

First day we hunted a beautiful property in the Waterburg mountains.

Saw lots of kudu and a lot of mountain reed buck and too many impala to count. Stalked on a big kudu but did not score. Also stalked a extremely large impala but again, failed to close the deal.

Today stayed at camp close to the Botswana border. Started off on a stalk on a large gemsbok. Chased them most of the morning, was stalking a large gemsbok and jumped a big waterbuck. Went after him and while stalking him we found a large Nyala at 60 yards so I put a bullet in him and the first one went in the salt.

Stalked after more gemsbok, zebra and a hartebeest unsuccessfully.

We found another large Nyala and we had memorable stalk but the wife was shook up more than she will admit to herself and missed her shots. Oh well, this is hunting.

This isn’t anything like what I imagine. You see a lot of game but killing it is quite another story. Our main camp is in terrain looks just like the Dilley/Bigwells area. Lots of brush make it very tough to get a clear shot.

Wife is on a mission to shoot everything she sees.

Tomorrow hope to get a gemsbok and a Kudu/Zebra.
