The 4 year old battery on my 2001 Honda Rancher died while I was deep in the pasture yesterday.
Started fine at house but only made about 1/2 a turn when I tried to start it after walking a piece of fence.

The upside of the story is it has a magneto and doesn't need the battery to run.
And an easy access cover over pull starter handle....flip on the key, one pull and I'm riding instead of walking!
Only the 2nd time I have ever used pull starter and first time was to test it out when I got it....

Use to run an old Polaris 6 wheeler, after the first battery died we just never put another one in it and used the pull start. It started pretty easy with it and was accessible from the driver seat while sitting on it.

Started our old 70 HP Evinrude outboard once just to see what it was like if we ever needed it. It was easy to start if the engine was hot, but cold it took several pulls. I don't think they put pull start provisions on most boats these days, wonder about the other UTV's?

It used to be a "thing" on ATVs and know of a few that have it but I have never seen one on a UTV.

I bought two 2000 Ranchers on the same day. One’s battery lasted 10 years. The other lasted 6 months. It gave out in the middle of Whitetail season 350 miles away from civilization. I yanked that rope for 6 months. But, it started easily.

Yeah, batteries usually last longer than that in the Honda for me too.

Problem is, I picked up a Mule 550 a few weeks after I put new battery in Honda and it became main ride around ranch.
I also picked up a 4X4 Mule 3010 that needs a little TLC that I am almost finished rebuilding.

The smooth ride and utility/usability of Mules around the ranch suit my old butt more than the ATV.
I keep hanging onto the Rancher since it's been my baby for years and years just for the 4X4 if/when needed but the new Mule has that so it may go up for sale.
And pig hunting 2up is much easier in a Mule....
