Skeet Choke and 8 1/2 spreader loads Hello Sniper John. Can you share more about this? Been a while, but when I researched spreader loads, at least one of the manufacturers stated that they were designed to open up a tight fixed choke. I think they stated that they wouldn't have any effect at all on a cylinder choke, so I passed on buying them, since I have cylinder choke. If you are having good results with a spreader load and skeet choke, could you please explain more?

Been a while, but when I researched spreader loads, at least one of the manufacturers stated that they were designed to open up a tight fixed choke. I think they stated that they wouldn't have any effect at all on a cylinder choke, so I passed on buying them, since I have cylinder choke. If you are having good results with a spreader load and skeet choke, could you please explain more? I believe it opens the pattern faster, but yes a more pronounced difference used in a tighter choke when comparing identical loads other than the insert or spreader wad. But I don't believe it reaches a point that it has no effect. It still has a different wad designed to open the pattern. It could be a post and disk that slows and pushes the shot to the outside, or insert that spreads the shot column, or thinner and or shorter petals that open faster, or combinations of the above. Some are probably more effective than others and some designs probably work better in different chokes. I have heard of one design of spreader that will not open if there is not enough choke. Probably the one with the disc on top and could be the the manufacturer your referencing. I believe the factory ammo I use has a wad similar to this one. My reloads use an insert of the same design. I do enjoy patterning loads, especially with 10 GA reloads. My 10 GA spreader handload and #5 heavy shot I had an extreme difference between an identical load otherwise with and without the spreader insert and something else I did to the wad I don't remember. I was using an IC choke despite what I read people say on forums about them not working with an open choke. I have no idea what the velocity of that load was, but it would have been on the fast side. My intent for that test load was to use river hunting at a specific location I was having issues with very close range shots on fast flying birds. I did not continue to use them after I dropped three ducks out of an eye level low passing flock with one shot. It was more like using a diffuser choke. It eventually would have got me in trouble when hunting that spot. I use a Verona over under with Briley extended chokes and a Smith Wesson 1000 having a fixed skeet barrel. All of this is best of my memory. It was a long time ago and not as precise as I would normally do. When I tested the Fiocchi spreader I only had a #8 regular load to test against it. Brand I do not remember and less formal on the rifle target board at my hunting lease range. At 15 yards the #8 regular load in skeet was still pretty tight with a heavy center pattern. The spreader load for sure did not have the heavy center and covered the target board well before the #8 regular load did as I moved out. The #8 load seemed to keep the denser pattern near center with holes in the pattern and fliers all over the place. I don't remember holes in the pattern with the spreader, but it was a heavy 8 1/2 with more shot. So no I was not comparing an Apple to an Apple. The Spreader was a faster load. People do say a higher velocity spreader opens faster than a slower one. My understanding is a spreader will also shorten the shot string. I use the same spreader load when hunting Rail in a non steel shot area and on un pressured Snipe. I can say without a doubt it opens faster and tears those close range little birds less than a #8 lead or #7 steel load. The difference may be that it is just a better quality load with a higher antimony shot that deforms less and patterns better, better wad, larger number of shot, and every different choke and barrel combination will be different with every load. Could I get the same result with a Cyl and #9 shot? Possibly

If I'm shooting with two barrels I use IC/LM or IC/M. In a single barrel I start with an IC and go to M if the birds are flying high. I use 7.5s almost exclusively.

If they're close, IC over IC.
Long crossers, LM over IC.

Improved Cylinder - usually good for the season. 7 1/2 or 8 shot. Late season may go to 6 shot if birds skittish; long range shots
