Who uses their expensive knives and whose are useable? I put this to the test several years back when my ex-wife got very involved in hunting and the full processing program with me. She picked her material and design (unknowingly) and I had it made for her by chopsknives. When I gave her the knife she was shocked and even more so when I told her it was to be used. I don’t recall how many deer and pigs that knife skinned without being sharpened but the last time I saw it (and her for that matter) it was still sharp and going strong. If I remember right Tim will sharpen and clean them up if you ship them to him. There’s likely a small fee related to that but I never had to use it so I don’t know.

Who else uses their custom knives?

I got interested in knife making by buying and collecting Bowies; I kept them in a glass case then it occurred to me WHY am I doing this? I sold them all and begin my knife making venture many years ago. I make hunting knives not sure what you are calling expensive but I make knives to work in the field. I've sold knives as cheap as $150.00 and as much as $1,200.00. I don't know why someone would buy a custom knife and not use it. Read some of the comments from my website on my guest book and see people use my knives.

I guess I’m calling custom knives ones worthy of a display case. I think many people buy these knives and never use them. They collect them. For me I’m not a collector and never will be, each has a purpose, I just want a nice knife for the purpose. I think most people consider a knife “expensive” at the $100-200 range. The one I was speaking of was +/- $500, I can’t remember exactly. Everyone has their limits though, I really want a folder from chops for edc but at $1400 it’s a no go for me, a drop in the bucket for others.

Sorry, didn’t intend to derail to the price of knives but more about the people who use them vs collects them.

Jankowski I’ve considered many of your knives. I like the ergonomics of them and feel they would be a great addition to what I have.

Thanks bro; I had to look up ergonomics, I'm a pretty fair bladesmith but terrible wordsmith.

Ergonomics (from the Greek word ergon meaning work, and nomoi meaning natural laws), is the science of refining the design of products to optimize them for human use. ...

That is the context I was using it in.

I have a couple MikeC knives that I use for hunting, both expensive to me $150-200. One stainless and one Damascus, both have cut up quite a few deer and hogs. A couple coyotes and plenty of rabbits. And my most expensive knive is from Jason fry $350. It’s a folder that is my edc cuts everything at work. Holds a great edge and sharpens right up.

Next once I hope is a Jank Knife.

I posted about that just the other day on my page. I make them to be pretty and useable. Always a bit frustrating, and maybe a little flattering, when people say they dont want to use the knife because it's too pretty

From a makers point of view, I'd hate to know that I put that much time and effort into a knife just to have it sit in a case. They are made to use no matter how simple or embellished!

I use mine... When my grand kids get them they wont have to worry about it. There is a difference between use and abuse.

Unless it was a Bob Loveless or a Bill Moran I'd display it only... but since I'll never be able to afford one, I don't worry about it. roflmao

Found a pic from when I bought it. If I remember correctly the black is buffalo horn and has a sure grip no matter how wet or bloody it was. I was impressed.

I've never paid more than ballpark $150 for a knife myself. When I was a boy my (former) stepdad made knives, as a side business and hobby. He could make anything, he even made lockback folding knives and people would pay him anywhere from a few hundred up to a couple thousand dollars for them.

Whenever he finished a knife, he put the edge against his snvil and whacked the spine with a big homemade brass hammer. If it couldn't shave a piece off that anvil and still be just as sharp as before, he would scrap it and start over!

I think he still makes knives. Stonewall knives on facebook maybe? But now he makes his own damascus and everything, used to use high grade bar stock. I don't kniw if they are as awesome.

It would be a crying shame to have a knife like that and never use it.

I own 2 Chops, 1 MikeC, and 1 S. Potts. They range from $500-140, respectively. They all get used for cleaning animals.

Going to add a Jank to the mix someday and one of Chops’ folders. I think the one o want is $2,000

That’s a real nice little looking knife.

I had Mike C make a set for me last year one has a gut hook. Since I didn’t take a deer last year I’m still waiting to put it to use. I wouldn’t mind having a folder made to carry as a EDC.

I could not keep a knife and not use it. I also could not risk snapping the tip or something off one that cost a few hunred dollar. I typically misuse and abuse them, I would not carry a nice knife for light work an still keep a beater in my pocket. So I will buy a decent knife but not a real nice one. and work it to death!

Knives are tools that are supposed to be used, just like guns. I have some custom Damascus knives made by Jody Muller that are worth in the thousands. They all get used and used often.
