Looking for some suggestions. I haven’t looked or even thought about a youth shotgun in forever but now my son is getting old enough to start getting more serious. He has shot my youth 20 gauge single shot and let’s be honest I don’t even like shooting it as an adult. Don’t want to spend a ton but do want something reliable and that will last. Mostly will be used for skeet now and dove, duck, quail later. Not stuck on a certain gauge but leaning towards 20 again since I’m well stocked on ammo.

I’d get the Weatherby or a Mossberg Youth SA-20.

Don’t roll those bloodshot eyes at me.

Youth single shot shotguns normally kick like a mule on those little shoulders. What TDK and booradley suggested are very good ideas.

Are those Weatherby SA08s as reliable as a Beretta AL390/391?
I’m in the market too.

They are good until you get into the thousands of shells. Good luck finding a 390 or 391. Beretta makes an outstanding shotgun.

The deal with an SA-08 youth is make sure it fits. Make sure it’s aligned when shouldered, without having to really conform yourself to the shotgun. It comes with some shims to adjust.

People are different and each can handle different stuff but I believe a youth pump shotgun is one of the worst things to inflict on a young person if you want them to develop good shooting skills.

To be determined

You can get reduced recoil loads for the single shots and pumps that make them much more tame.

I bought my boy the Weatherby semi-auto and it's been great. We're well into the hundreds of rounds with it at this point. It is a pretty light recoiling gun. My boy handled it at 9-10 years old no problem and even ran some 3" duck loads thru it the last couple years at 11 & 12 years old and never had issue with recoil. He's an average sized kid.

Can't mix the SA and the low recoil loads. It won't cycle them.

I believe they are. My daughter’s is still running strong after ten years.

Another Vote for the Weatherby SA-08.

I have one for my wife and my kids shoot it well with no issues.

With standard dove loads recoil is non-existant

For it is not the quarry that we truly seek, but the adventure.
