You're right a larger bullet doesn't make up for poor shot placement. However I have found it opens up more shots or angels for a kill shot.
Bullet construction/choice is where the rubber meets the road, not this misguided advice........"but extra gun/bullet is good insurance for a slight mis placement"

Not necessarily. If the 180 is a stoutly constructed bullet and the shot mets little resistance, e.g., goes thru the lungs, it might expand very little and do less damage than a 95gr bullet designed appropriately for the target and the velocity.
