Anyone have any "remedies" for getting better/ more sleep?
Seems like since the start of the year I can't get to sleep.I've always gone to bed around 10:00pm or a little after.
But this year I can't really get to sleep until midnight or sometimes 2AM and I get up at 7:30 usually since I help take care of my niece(s) and Nephew. I know I'm not getting enough sleep I need and I wonder if it has gotten to the point where it's affecting my" health " just since January I've been sick with a cold 5 or more times, about once a month and I'm getting tired of it, and I'm starting to think it boils back down that I'm getting too little sleep....

Or do I just have a weak immune system.

Figure out what has changed. Something has changed. Medicine, stress, stress, fear of mortality, stress, lack of exercise, did I mention stress? If your getting up at 7:30 regularly youre either retired or a millennial. Which one. Itll be easier to diagnose.

Recorded music with ear buds. No commercials. No disk jockey talking. Music drowns out the voices.

Millennial.
I don't fear mortality as much as I used too.
Probably not lack of exercise, I'm on my feet most of the day, either chasing down kids or working on Lawnmowers.
Not any medicine, though I Probably should be

Work and chasing after kids is not exercise. Get out and take a run every evening, or set aside some time for exercise, such as X number of set ups, jog in place, ride a stationary bicycle, jumping jacks, knee bends squats etc.. Kids? get them into doing the exercises at the same time, in the spring and fall when the weather permits, you run and let them ride their bikes.

5 ours of sleep at your age you should be good to go. When I was your age normal bedtime was 2 or 3 or 4am and usually up at 7am for work. Worked hard, partied harder, loved every minute of it. Now, at 34, I still get 5-6 hours a day. I just became accustomed to it. I hit the sack at 7:30am and up at 1pm.

I just make it up on the weekends... But we don't roll into work until 9 or 10. I can do emails from bed at 8 am after getting kids out the door... But my choice. Otherwise would get help.

Your mind is racing and will not let you sleep. Settle in for a few hours before bed. Watch a movie. Let yourself unwind. Maybe a shot of whiskey. Maybe a bite to eat.

The secret is to quiet the mind before attempting sleep.

You could also be caffeine sensitive and it won't allow your mind to quit running no matter how tired you are. Look at your caffeine intake and try to quit any caffeine after early afternoon, 1500 hours is the latest for me if I want to be asleep at 2230 hours.

Our company brought in a consulting firm to discuss improving performance and how sleep, as well as exercise impact play a key role. They recommended the following steps for better sleep:

Room should be under 70 degrees and dark
all electronic devices should be turned off an hour before bedtime
no caffeine after 7:00 pm
Stop eating 2-3 hours before bedtime
Stop alcohol consumption 2-3 hours before bedtime

Good advice - works for getting the kiddos to sleep as well. Plus take a stroll and a bath before bedtime to reduce stress, no music, no phone, just quiet time.

Leave your baby sitting job and go do a good days physical labor you will sleep like a rock. You're a young man you were designed to exert energy.

I slept great all my life. I could be awoken in middle of night and always go back to sleep. I got into early 60s and started sleeping much worse. I think my sleeping issues corresponded with a drop in Testosterone. T is still average to low average so not real bad but I don't know...
The last 6 months the sleep has gotten much worse. I always go to sleep easily but wake up for no apparent reason after 3 to 4 hours. I definitely have a racing mind and its likely worse lately so once awake my mind wont let me go back to sleep. The last 6 months I have had a life style change and im much less active so maybe that's it. Ive started exercising some but maybe not enough...?
I doubt this helped the OP but im desperate as well. I have heard horror stories about Ambien but just rumors. Doc recently gave me Trazodone and it doesn't help much. That's the only pills of any kind I have taken in my life-- I don't even like to take aspirin. I am fit and healthy.

Have you gained weight?

I slept like a rock up until my early 20s. Since then I really stopped exercising and was in general taking poor care of myself. Was sleeping terribly. Started snoring horribly too. Drove my wife nuts.

In the past 3 months I've dropped 30 pounds and the sleep and snoring has improved drastically. Also cut out cokes and a ton of sugar. Still have an energy drink in the morning on occasion because I like them, but for the most part no caffeine after about lunch time (unsweet tea or black coffee).

I'm in bed around 10:00; wife and I usually talk for a while...so I'm probably asleep around 10:30..I pretty much close my eyes and I'm out...up at no later than 4:30 every day. Adults do not need 8 hours of sleep. 6 is plenty for most people if you're taking good care of yourself. When I was overweight and heavy on the cokes/sugar I was foggy for about the first 2 hours of being up...now - I'm wide awake and good to go once that alarm goes off. I can't even sleep in on the weekends. Once I hit about 5.5 to 6 hours of sleep I'm wide awake. (my wife hates it...she likes sleep a lot more than I do).

With that said - I get much worse sleep around and during a full moon. For whatever reason.

May not work for everyone but all of the above has worked for me.

Edit: If you're 16 you need 8 hours of sleep.

I've battled chronic insomnia for a while, I'm currently sleeping well, mine started when I developed a reaction to an allergy medicine I had been on for years. My sympathetic nervous system started to get overactive when I took that medication. Once it was sensitized other things could trigger it and cause sleep problems. One thing that works is a weighted blanket, for some reason the extra weight calms the SNS, I have one and it works well for me.

These are the three I would mention. I'm 49 and if I don't tire myself out in the evenings I don't sleep well. Even if I can fall asleep, it's fitful. I avoid caffeine after 1pm. I also watch what time of day I eat carbohydrates and try not to eat anything within 3 hours of going to bed. Lastly, turn off the devices an hour before bed and let your mind settle.

Carbohydrates help you sleep, protein interferes, it's preferentially absorbed over DHA across the blood brain barrier. DHA is the precursor to melatonin.

If I eat carbs late my body gets energized, and I also sleep a lot hotter at that point.

Work out in the evening, and get some "big chief time" with the lady. Also read a book in bed, works all the time.

If everything is same as before then you need to listen to your body. It is telling you something. The human body is an amazing creation of God. Crazy the abuse it can take from us.

Sleep is how it recovers and repairs itself as well as recharge.

I would recommend getting checked out by your regular physician.

I would not recommend listening to the self diagnosing here. The body needs 6-8 hours for its benefit. It will adjust if you make it, but again, we abuse our bodies a lot.

Something has changed, you just may not know it yet.

Too bad your so far away,

My Wife has just decided to change her mattress as she has had major back work done, the mattress was the best made memory foam, less then two years ago, absolutely no stains, rubs, tears or wear spots, its like new, and it cost her better then $16,000.

16 years old.... My best advice to you is #1, no caffeine of any kind after 3 pm. And #2 early evening put the phone away, close the laptop, and turn the desktop computer off. Thus during early evening wind down time no online gaming, no texting with friends, no online news, no surfing. Let your mind escape the drama and settle. It effects you more than you know. I am no stranger to lack of sleep. As a teenager I was a street racer, married a hot goth chick, then chose a career that had me waking up from sleep to going 100 percent mentally and physically several times a night. I'm hopeless, but those two things I suggest changing are the two things that caused the same sleep problem for my sons when they were your age.

I vote for a new mattress, dark room, no TV or other noise. Have you gained weight? if so get a more plush mattress; fatties need a plush top not a firm. I learned this the firm way lol.
