What's the best food plot for South Texas that will stand up to dry conditions?

I tried Sunn Hemp this year as a mix in my cowpeas. I drilled it in at a 10#/acre rate(30-50# drilled in rate is recommended) with 45# of cowpeas on about 5 acres. The deer did not give it or the cowpeas much of a chance after about 3 weeks of growth. It outlasted the cowpeas as far as grazing pressure and drought tolerance. Field grass became a major issue but the Sunn Hemp was able to compete. It can grow fast and is high in protein under good growing conditions. Dense planting rates can shade out weeds/grass. The downside of it is, if it gets to tall it gets difficult to manage. If it gets mature and very tall it is like shredding rope. I shredded the grass in that Sunn Hemp/Cowpea plot last week and will see if it comes back. It was only about 10"-12" tall with the stand I had left. Next year I am going to plant it at a much higher rate per acre and not mix anything with it in a 4 acre area that I do not plant oats in for fall hunting.

I think I waited to late to plant summer plots but, I've been wanting to mix sunn hemp with lab lab. I don't have a drill either, I have a 100hp tractor, 14ft disc, and 15ft shredder. Planted oats last year and wasn't to impressed thought they would last longer into the winter. They ran a new pipeline through our place in January, so I'll probably plant some of it this September depending on soil moisture.

As my buddy says, they work 1 out of 5 years...

With the rain, the grass took over everything. So, making lemonade... a guy that does some spraying for me when I can't keep up came out and started treating & managing it for hay. He is going to cut, bale, and spray it to kill it next week. Then, I will turn it over in prep for fall.

By the time I lost control of the growth, it was used as cover for fawning, so I didn't like manipulating it or having a tractor on it at all. It served a purpose, bumper fawn crop!

Its not raining where I'm at, the story of my life...…….Usually starts raining in November every year, September and October are usually dry and if it rains in September its dry within 2-3 days.
