Dad and I drew NM Unit 15 ML tags this year. I do not own a ML, nor have I ever fired a ML. So...it is time for a quick lesson before October gets here!

I am looking to buy either a Remington 700 Ultimate Muzzleloader or the TC Encore Pro Hunter. I am curious if anyone with ML experience could lend an opinion at the two different rifles.

Once I choose a rifle, I will get into figuring out a proper load recipe.

The Remington Ultimate is a very nice muzzleloader. My brother bought one for a NM muley hunt we did a couple years ago. He has had a Gunwerks since, which was also very nice.

If I were buying a muzzleloader today it would be the CVA Paramount. Limits you in a few places (can't use it in Colorado for instance), but is perfectly legal for deer and elk in NM, AZ, and UT.

Is your hunt a 'restricted' or non-restricted Muzzleloader tag-- it matters--

I have shot a handful of them in Colorado and Montana. I would not purchase a TC...the ones that my friends had would not shoot the same place twice unless you cleaned them in between shots. It has been a while since then but that was my experience.
One thing I also noticed that is very important, is that if you sight in when it is warm and nice out and then you end up in the snow and cold...your poi is often way off!

Unit 15 is not restricted.

If you aren't restricted and you don't regularly hunt in areas that have restrictive muzzleloader regulations then I would get the biggest, baddest, longest shooting muzzleloader (Rem700) that I could.

stxranchman has hunted with a muzzleloader. may pm him.

I don't hunt with one but if its a good tag, spring for a good one that would be easy to re-sell if you don't plan on using it in the future.

For it is not the quarry that we truly seek, but the adventure.

I have an older Rem 700ML in 54 that is really accurate. I also have an old TC Renegade in 54. I have taken 9 or 10 elk with them in my native CO, most of them with theTC. Have also taken around 20 deer of various species in a number of states. While not the models you are looking at they are from the same makers.

My suggestion is too look at both side by side and get the one that fits you best and then work up an accurate load. 5 grains of power can make a big difference.

Also I would recommend that you use Blackhorn 209 powder. It is a little more expensive but is a good propellent. The best thing is you can shoot many times without having to constantly swab the barrel.
Keep in mind you need to clean this product like you do with modern firearms. Don't use water based cleaning when using Blackhorn.

Do both, you need two any way. That way you aren’t restricted on future states. Machining Technology is about
as good as it’s going to get, components will be the future difference.

My one off advice is get stainless.

Im clueless about muzzles but yall got me curious. If a man went completely top of the line what would the distance be that you could expect a 95% kill off a good rest?

Top of the line, and very liberal state regulations 500-600 yards maybe a touch more.

Very traditional and conservative regs like CO, is how ever good you are with open sights, say 200 +- yards maybe a little more.

Liberal just can’t use breech loading, has to load from Muzzle

Thanks Bobo but once again im dumb as red dirt. Considering what you just said, what kind of DISTANCE could top line equipment within OK regs allow you to stretch out to with a good rest and expect 95% kills on deer??

With mastering a system like Mcwhorter or Gunwerks offers I say 400 pretty easy 5-600 if you spend the time to truly learn the rifle

wow, I had no idea. I thought the reasons they had special seasons for them was because they had very limited range, like 100 yds to 150 max. Maybe that was the old days. Thanks.

some states like CO keep regulations in check to keep them more traditional no optics, no sabot bullets, no smokeless powder or even pellets etc.

I heard that Oklahoma has a new muzzleloader regulation about hunting after "knee surgery" and no longer allows hunting for the season after said surgery bolt Said it was the "Clown Clause".... grin
