It’s been over 20 years since I’ve gone Dove hunting. Feeling the itch to go out this season and looking to purchase a dedicated Dove shotgun and see if I take to Dove hunting. Looking to stay under 800, but would probably go to 1K. If I do enjoy it, I’ll buy something fancy in the future.
Currently looking at a Remington 11-87 Sportsman Field, Semi-Automatic, 20 Gauge, 26" and a CZ 920 20 Gauge, 28″ Barrel. Leaning towards the Remington. Any pros/cons? Known issues? Should I look at others? Appreciate the help.

I selected a Beretta A350 to replace my $200 Mossberg a few years ago. I love that shotgun.

Yes, I specifically wanted a camo shotgun. Look at the A400. My hunting buddy went that route and it's a nicer shotgun than mine with more features. (and not camo!!)

For dedicated Dove hunting you might want to research your choices to rule out any models that have known problems cycling light or promo inexpensive low brass type loads. The type of shells most places sell for Dove hunting tend to shoot dirty and you will likely be shooting multiple rounds.

Buy an old A5 20ga. They’re hard to beat when you’re sitting on a chair drinking cold beer. Beats the chit out of the 1187 you’re looking at. I carry an old Superposed to quail hunt with because it’s light. You can’t beat the Humpback if you don’t want to miss.

Buy an older Beretta AL391 in 20 gauge or even the 390.

28 gauge is an incredibly good dove and quail gatherer, recoil of a .410 but reaches out like a 20 ga. I have both 20 semi auto and 28 o/u and choose the 28 every time.... the 20 is reserved for pheasant. You can get a 28:Yildiz o/u at Academy in the $400ish range, spend the savings on the overly priced ammo.

Pickup the 1100 lt 20 gauge in the classifieds. A good 1100 is hard to beat.

Nothing wrong with an 1187 if it's what you want. Clay shooters have favored 1100's for a long time. They are very soft shooting shotguns that have held up well to heavy use and time.

I need to change out my O-rings but my 1100 sat for 20 years at my Grandfather’s house and I inherited it when he passed. I took it apart, cleaned/lubed it up and did not have 1 single failure at Dave’s skeet shoot event.
I did however fall in love with another one though. And old Browning Double Auto 12ga.
Dad-gum I loved that gun the second I saw it. Unique loading port on the left side. Just a beaut

My wife wants one, I have no clue why. She has an M2 field but has a really hard time loading it. I dont enjoy it because it rubs blisters on my thumb. So, since she wont use her M2, I continually look for an A5 20 for her

I caution a man to load this several times if he has fat thumbs. I love the gun, wife's, but after an afternoon of hunting, I have a blister on my thumb. Maybe I dont load correctly, but that loading port is narrow.

Beretta is king for a reason, there are any number of new or used options in your price range. They're very reliable, don't require much cleaning, and the gas system does a good job with light target or dove hunting loads.

Another vote for the Weatherby SA-08. I bought the 12 as an all-around gun, and it's very mild with dove loads. I imagine the 20 is that much softer. I shopped a long time, probably looked at nearly every semi-auto on the market under $1200. The Weatherby just 'fit'. However, I think the secret is out and the price has gotten up some. You're not far from Beretta country at this point. When I bought mine (wood stock) I was out the door under $500.

If you can, try a few out. When it comes to shotguns fit means a lot. I use a citori for everything from skeet to duck, mainly because it fits me well. I'd love to get a matching one in 410, just have a hard time spending the money on a scattergun and paying more for less shell.
