Looking for advice from people who grow axis. Does he have potential to get wider and longer beams based on where he is now? I believe he is 3 or 4 yrs old but I think 3. At what age do they peak in horn growth?

That's what I was looking for singleshot. I have some whitetail and by 3 or 4 I can usually tell if a buck is worth keeping or just doesn't have it. Haven't been around axis enough to figure it out for them. I have heard they reach potential about 6 yrs old. Thanks for help

If his current antler growth pattern is maintained, he could become a real trophy. If the 2nd tine down from the tip, sometimes called the "coddle tine", reaches up almost to the same height as the tip when he is full grown, he'd be a really good axis. The problem with axis is, if he is free range or not protected on a ranch, the 1st guy with a gun in his hands is gonna shoot! Better you than them...

Looks young and his antlers have a huge amount of potential if he has a few more years to grow.

We have shot axis at 7 and 8 years old that we watched grow up and they kept getting better every year. We have also shot some axis that have been 10+ years old. They tend to live longer than whitetail

Is he free range? "A bird in hand is better than two in the bush". Why are you shooting him? Do you want meat, taxidermy, trophy? He's not a "trophy" to some people but the trophy for you may be in the accomplishment. If he suits your goals then pull the trigger. What does waiting until he is bigger or picking another buck cost you? That is for you to decide. All this is personal so the consensus of a forum should not influence or provoke you either way.
If I want the meat or hide a doe would be just as good. If I wanted a "wall hanger" he's not it. If I hunted hard and got close, outsmarted him fair and square, moreso with archery or even traditional muzzleloader I would pull the trigger on him. To shoot him at the feeder from a blind with a modern rifle does nothing for me personally.
You have to use your judgment to determine if this will be satisfying to you. No shame either way. He's a good looking buck.

High fence on my place, so unless he gets poached or dies of natural causes, I'll give him few more years. He's being fed 20% free choice.

I was asking because like I said I don't know axis yet. Far as how they grow out and mature. He's on my high fence place that is not hunted, yet. I am wanting to raise trophies, (wall hangers} and was wanting to know if this guy has potential or not, so he doesn't spread his genes any further. Looks like he will get a pass for few more years.

if your meat hunting take that sucker! one in the bed is better than one in the bush. but the likely hood of him sticking around on a low fence for a couple more years turning into a trophy is not likely unless you have a big track and your neighbors don't kill him
