University of Texas offers Free tuition for kids if your family makes under 65k a year.

So if you have 5 kids and make 65k a year, youre better off not to get raises or promoted at work. . This is the new trend.

Why not cut the cost in half and make everyone pay it back?

I read that in the morning paper. Didn't sound right to me.

It’s pondering nothing more nothing less, but several schools have similar programs, low income families that meet admissions requirements already have the least financial upfront cost and least economic barriers. The Fed specifically incentives low income demographic students, especially at state level.

It’s their endowment so what ever but I would atleast like it applied to specific degree programs only. Like STEM.

They figure they will make up the money with the scam on mandatory dorm and food plan policy. MY daughter is going to UNT and her dorm with food plan (both mandatory) comes to almost $5K a semester. That for a room shared with someone else and a bathroom shared by 4 other people. The mortgage on my 60 acre farm costs less per month.

I like the idea of giving lower income families options ... but UT currently turns away a lot of students that are in the top 10% of their graduating class ... Why offer lower income families if they are already turning people away?

Did something change? I thought they had to accept the top 10%?

3/4 are via class rank, other fourth a holistic review....

And you know some parents are going to try to game the system. Some parents will do ANYTHING to get their kid into a decent college.

UT has an exception that they only accept top 6% for automatic admission.

Roll Tide of course I'm going to disagree with you. What's wrong with paying a good students way through college if his or her family can't afford it?

the sad thing is, there are going to be a lot of people who try and rig the system.

Hopefully there are academics requirements which must be met before being considered for the free tuition (i.e. GPA level 3.75+, etc.)

It’s endowment money so it’s what ever, not technically costing anyone, but it’s pandering at its finest, Low income students all ready have the LEAST barriers for financial aid and grants.

Yeah because either way they were going to get grants from the government if not loans. If any of y'all are for merit-based scholarship then you shouldn't disagree with this. If a kid makes the grades to get into UT and, has the SAT scores to back it up, then is able to maintain hey GPA why not? When the wife and I get to a certain place in life, we hope to send one kid to college per year. Remember it's not the kids fault the parents happen done more to get ahead in life.

It's all coming from grant money, so the university will get paid either way.

Rather my kids go to a trade school anyway.

Plenty of bachelor degree holders making $12/hr right now because their degree is worthless.
