I fed year round for many years. It was more about shooting hogs and any stray exotics.
For years we had a fellow hunter on the lease that would show up with corn on Friday evening before opening Saturday. He always got just as good of deer as anyone else on opening weekend.
Most guys were sometime in September

We start feeding around the 1st of September, and quit filling the feeders mid December. Every one around us feeds year around, they have hogs, we rarely see them on our place. Keeping the hogs out of the fields is more important. We also have the majority of the pasture cover in the area, so once the feeders start, the deer are there.

I use to feed almost year round, depending upon rain I usually stopped around April if conditions were lush that provide natural forage and start back when it starts drying up usually first of July and I would notice more deer activity shortly after starting back up up

I have always fed both protein and corn feeders year round. Now I have them both in the same pen and hunt those feeders. Two years ago I stopped feeding corn in early spring and did not start again till late summer with corn. I did notice a difference in the early bow season with the amount of deer I was seeing compared to years past when I was feeding corn year round. I went back to year round corn this year and have more deer on camera this year at this time of the year compared to last couple of years.

If you have to many deer and poor habitat then they will eat it year round. I had to turn my corn feeders down to 1 second twice per day in early August and corn still grew in pens. This was after shredding the pen about 3 weeks earlier and pulling all the corn up around the feeders. Huge mast crop and 20" of rain from late June till mid October. Sometimes you can not make deer eat corn when there is plenty of natural groceries. In November it rained another 9" more. I could go several nights and days without getting a photo of a deer in a feed pen with free choice protein and corn in the summer and into the fall. I even had oats planted with very little usage till the mast crops were gone and it froze.

The reason I stopped feeding April, May & June was there was very little deer activity and a big increase in Tree Rats, Coons and Birds (did not mind the birds) so I decided the area was better served not attracting the varmits and then trying to run them off later.

Last lease I was on we fed year round and the other paying hunters and owner fed a month or two before the season till they got their deer. We always saw and shot more and better deer. Several years the owners would ask to sit our stands to get a couple does because they weren't seeing much. Was a pretty night and day difference on that property.

Doesn't hurt anything besides your wallet to feed year around. Some places it won't matter, some it will. We have always had better results feeding year round and I like looking at game camera pictures in the off season so I still do this.

Have 4 feeders and start all on September 1st and do last fill in 2 mid January. Fill 2 that run that run most of year so I can hog hunt off season. They run out but when I'm there I refill the 2.

Six of us on a lease. I feed year round and other five do not. All I hear is complaining during the hunting season is why they are not seeing deer. I say well i guess it is because I feed year round.

As with a lot of the posts - we used to feed year round but kept too many pigs + expense. Now we start up in mid September with the corn, but do have a few protein feeders in prime spots year round. The more the corn feeders run, it seems the more maintenance is needed.

Why don't I feed year round????

$$$$$$

Hogs

Time

$$$$$$

We go out and fill up When Dove season opens. Keep them full until December or so. Everyone takes deer. Everyone could fill their (5 deer) tags.

We hunt 4 to 5 hours from where we live. With kids, wives, work and just life that is a lot of time just to go down to fill feeders.

This

Seems to me critters are habitual animals. "Let me think... sometimes there is food over there at location A, but there is always food at location b. I'm going to B".

Put hog panels around your feeder and no more hogs.

Exact reason I started switching everything to 600 lb feeders and wireless game cameras. I dont make a single unnecessary trip and feeders never run out unexpectedly.

Just depends on the place. Deer have so much natural feed where we are that feeding year round makes no difference. We still run two feeders year round but only get young guys March to August. It doesn't help in the long run many places except for piggies. Does hardly even hit them. I filled our best feeder for turkey season to see what was coming in and corn just piled up so not worth it. It changes late Sept though.

I made a pipe feeder and hung it about a month ago. Added a camera. Nothing but coons and I though I had it high enough to be coon proof.
