Hello All,

I am preparing for my first deer hunt this year. I will hunt deer in Texas. I live in Houston. I recently purchase this rifle https://honeybadgerfirearms.com/product/savage-arms-11111-trophy-hunter-xp-308-win-41/.

I went hog hunting with the rifle using this ammo : Winchester Power-Point Hog Special .308 Winchester 150-Grain Centerfire Rifle Ammunition

I have my rifle sight in pretty good now.

Questions:

1. Can I shoot deer with the same ammo I use to shoot hogs?

2. I am planning to buy a semi automatic rifle (AR10 maybe) for hog hunting only and use my rifle for deer hunting. However, is it recommended to use the same rifle for deer and hog hunting with two different types of ammo? Just asking.

Thank you kindly.

See my reply to your other post. Whatever you choose to hunt deer will work for hogs also. Don't use different ammo, because they may not have the same point of impact. Shot placement...

Yes, that ammo doesn't know know the difference and neither will the hog or deer know the difference.
Sight in with one type of ammo that shoots well and use it.

Once i learned that i didn't "NEED" to kill something, and that if i did kill something all the fun stopped and work began, i was a much better hunter.

If your satisfied with the accuracy of the Winchester Hog ammo in your .308 Semi. I would stick with it for deer also. Winchester and other manufacturers that designate Hog or Deer rounds tend to expose a lot more lead at the tip of the bullet. This may cause feeding issues in your semi.Especially on rounds that were fed into the chamber and not fired then re used at a later time.

Just keep in mind that hogs can be harder to kill with a single bullet than deer. Quickly re-chamber a bullet after the initial hit and be ready to fire again if needed. And remember to unload afterwards. I never chamber a round until I'm in the stand and always leave with an empty chamber. I'll chamber a round from the magazine if there should be a need otherwise.

Personally, I prefer to aim for the base of the skull or top of the neck with shooting at a hog. With deer, I always aim for the heart/lung area and won't take a shot unless I have a clean view of the area that holds the vitals. Also, for a deer that's standing at a angle to you, consider the trajectory of the bullet so that it will pass through the heart and lungs and adjust the aim accordingly. I never take a shot at a deer that's quartering away if the bullet has a chance of hitting any part of the stomach before passing through to the heart and lungs. Not only is a paunch hit deer much harder to clean, a deer than has only been hit in the stomach for run for much greater distances before expiring.

And remember, deer can and often do run 100 yards or more when hit in the vitals so ALWAYS look for the deer after every shot. Blood splatter is a good thing but may not be visible even with a well hit deer. Some guys say if you haven't looked for at least an hour, you haven't looked at all. And practice shooting until you can't miss, then practice some more.

Good luck.

Good basic information, Dan. All more important than which bullet to use.

Looked at this thread to see if I had anything to add but Texas Dan covered everything pretty well.

Reminds me of an old saying from deer camp: HOW you shoot a gun is much more important than WHAT kind of gun you shoot.

1. Yes, you can use the same ammo on deer.

2. If you use a semi auto rifle for hog hunting, then you will need to find the ammo that it likes. It may not like the ammo that you are currently using in your bolt action rifle.

When you get your AR10 if you go with .308, I use Chad's 178 gr. AMAX with great results and very cost effective. It's not really designed as a hunting bullet, but it has rolled over every hog or deer I've ever shot with it, as well as very accurate at the range and long distance. Check out is add in the classified section of this site.

150 grain Winchester Power Points have been killing deer for several decades.

Find a load your rifle likes and stick with it. Shot placement is key regardless - I have put down a 300# pig with a 95gr Hornady in my .243 Tikka. Just get comfortable with the load and get your scope dialed in. Good luck sir!
