Just checked my cameras and had pics of a doe with a serious injury to her face.

Any guesses what might have happened to her? Seems like a weird injury, almost like a de-gloving injury or something ripped a patch of skin off her face.

Any thoughts on whether she will make it or not? First pic was June 11th, most recent was june 19, she was eating the whole time, at any rate. Hopefully will get some more pics of her over the next few days.

Below are several of the pics showing the progression, the most recent one looks like the outer layer is black and sloughing off, not sure if that is good or bad. [Linked Image]

I thought it looked like a snake bite too. It looked so swollen before, turned black and necrotic, sloughing off like a brown recluse bite except way bigger.

At least she is still eating.

Good thoughts on the abscess and the snake bite! I had noticed the middle pictures first, and focused on those where it looked like the skin was missing, but looking more closely at the first pic it sure looks like the skin is intact, with just the hair gone.

After posting, I sent the pics to one of my cousins, who sent them on to a vet she knows, and the vet immediately said snake bite. So RattlesnakeDan, hit the nail on the head, and also proved he deserves his name!

The vet thought she had a fair chance of making it. Will be interesting to see if she does!

In the last photo she still seems to be in good shape. If she is eating , there is a good chance for getting through it.

^^^^^ Agreed. Good chance of making it.

Years ago...before the eradication of ScrewWorms I'd have said chances were "Slim to None" (and Slim just left the building). But She looks pretty healthy in that most recent pic....so I'm putting my money on 'She Survives'.

must not have been a big dose of venom, usually a bite in that area the swelling is so bad that is cuts off their breathing

My buddy had a game cam pic of an 8 pointer with the same injury except to his rear leg. The skin was coming off and it looked like a 3rd degree burn. It looked horrible! But there he was eating at the feeder every day. Our thoughts were that it was a rattlesnake bite.

Looks to be in decent body condition through it all and is still coming to food, I think she is gonna pull through.

I agree with this ^^^^. I also think people are tuffer than what most will let on, maybe some roll over and die, but some show an extreme will to survive.

90% of getting an animal to heal is eating/drinking. If they are doing that then they will make it almost every time.

Just got back out to the ranch and checked the pics for last week, the doe is still alive as of this morning, and looking pretty good! You guys who predicted survival were on the money.

Here are some pics 9 days after the last pic and 17 days after the first pic.... Looks like the necrotic tissue sloughed off and she is healing right up. I actually hope it leaves enough of a scar that we can pick her out and keep an eye out for her....

She is doing a lot better. I was hoping you would be able to post more pics of her, thanks for doing that. She may have some scaring, but one thing is for sure- she one tough mamma!

Could that injury be from a cactus thorn?

Hi Dalee,

Good question, for whatever it is worth, the Vet who looked at the pics was very sure it was a snakebite.

I kinda think if it was an abscess from a thorn it would have eventually popped, but the big patch of tissue on the outside might not have rotted away like it did...

Just a quick update, got a couple of pics of the this week, and she is looking good! This is almost exactly one month after the first pic of her, and she is just about healed up, looks like it may not even leave much of a scar.

Glad she is making it! Definitely an impressive recovery after the pics where it looked like half her face was rotting off....
