I grew up in northern VT, been trying to get rid of Komrade Bernie for 40 years!! I've been all over the Northeast. 91 and 93 North into VT are both really pretty. Route 2 across VT, NH, and Maine is pretty and will hit some cool spots in each state. I will say the foliage and changing color works its way south from Canada. It really depends on the weather, if its cool/cold early, the colors change early. If it rains, the leaves fall quick and the foliage season ends quick. Mt Washington is really cool as stated, and the cog railway is something to see. Be prepared for a huge temp swing at the top vs at the bottom. That train goes right up the side of a mountain and you gotta hang on. Franconia Notch (NH) on I93 is awesome. Burlington VT is like a little Austin, but more lib. Portland Maine is a fun little city. Northern Maine is like another planet. PM me if you want to run some ideas through when you get a plan.

68rustbucket, here is where I have been reviewing reciprocity and then looking at each state's laws.

68rustbucket,

Here is a place to start to help you to know what is required if you want to go into Canada, but make sure you call and talk to someone who knows their stuff too.

I hate it but it is just Not worth the paperwork and hassle to take pistol into Canada, IMO. Find somewhere to lock it up in USA and retrieve on way back. Otherwise, its gonna be a spectacular New England trip. We did that whole loop on 2 week honeymoon 30 years ago. Need to do it again.

I’m not looking to go into Canada, but wife would like a tour of NE. There are some pistol unfriendly areas up there. New York is one. The way I read it, you can pass through with one, if you stop and spend the night you are breaking the law.

We just scheduled a cruise from New York to Quebec in mid October. Looking for that lobster as well.

Staying overnight or even stopping to get gas could get into a gray area. I understand that many of the law enforcement agencies now have online access to NICS from their cars and could know you are LTC before they encounter you at you car window.

I just got back from Kennebunk this past weekend. The family and I have gone up there for the past four years for vacation and in-laws. We stay right near downtown Kennebunkport.
School just ended there, so it is about to get real busy. Come September, everything will get slow again and the seasonal places will start closing also. The weather stayed in the mid 70's for the most part. Lobster is pricey in the restaurants (still cheaper than anything in Texas), so if you can find a lobsterman, bonus points. Some will even cook it for you and you take it home and enjoy.Keep your eyes open for baitshops and roadside stands for the best prices on Lobster rolls.

If the Texas flag is flying at the Bush compound, then they are there, if you are in to that. It is alongside one of the main roads, so hard to miss if you are driving up the coast. If the tour buses are in town, go and find a place and have a long drink and avoid the stores.

We made the trip up to Acadia National Forest..........beautiful and breathtaking.
On the way there we stopped at Fort Knox and walked around the old fort. Those soldiers had to be tough to live thru the winters.
Next door to the fort is the Penabscot Bridge, tallest bridge with observatory....you are way up there.

The small towns and backroads are always worth the drive and everyone has always been nice. Maybe it is because the 4th of July is coming, but it seems that area just screams American history, patriotism, etc.... A lot of Red, White and Blue.

Let me know if you have any questions on anything specific.
