Any recommendations on good eats between Houston and Austin via 290?

Brenham: Los Cabos for Tex-Mex, Nathan's BBQ, The Truth BBQ

Giddings: keep driving unless you want fast food

Elgin: Meyers or Southside Mkt. for mediocre BBQ, couple of average Mexican joints.

I drive it twice a week and other than Los Cabos in Brenham there is literally nothing really worth mentioning. I cant help you with anything west of Elgin.

Stop in Brenham at Rau's Meat Market for the best dried sausage. Bring your ice chest for take home link sausage. Rau's is not a restaurant so don't plan to sit down. You'll be enjoying the dried sausage before you're back on the highway

Last time through that way saw a BBQ place that looked interesting. May have been Giddings, was downtown on the north side of road. The hours posted on front caught my eye, they opened at 7:30 AM.

You give Southside and Myer's too much credit unless they have greatly improved lately. In Gddings that would be City Meat Market, never had it but was told it was on par with the Elgin stuff.

The Southside market in Bastrop is my stop when going east on 21. Pretty good pork spare ribs!

Giddings B&B barbecue has awesome daily specials and burgers that you will find a hard time beating. Giddings downtown restaurant also has awesome daily lunch specials.

Where is B&B barbecue? We're in Lexington and I haven't heard of that place.

About a quarter mile west of 77 on 290. They are also open for breakfast and it’s great. I actually know the owners, good Christian folks. Open 6a to 2p.

If you plan to stop in Brenham:

BBQ: Truth - open Friday - Sunday; LJ's BBQ - open Wednesday - Sunday - I try and eat at LJ's once a week. If you like moist brisket cuts don't go to Nathan's, they don't know what that means there. Nathan's does something to my stomach that I will leave it at that.
Mexican: Lupitas Market is pretty damn good, then Los Cabos would be second.

Have to stop at Wiekel's bakery in Brenham for kolaches, best there is. If you like poppyseed get the poppyseed wraps, loaded with filling, and every other variety is really good.

Last time I drove it there was nothing roadside - you had to go into Brenham itself.

Stopped in Brendan today and had Scholtskys because I was unsure of the sit down restaurants, going to have to try Los Cobos next time.

City market in Giddings...no.

I haven't been to The Truth BBQ in Brenham, but the one is Houston is probably some of the best BBQ I have ever eaten. It is brewing a local cult following with lines on weekends and selling out after a lunch rush.

Chappell Hill sausage is ok but IMO Burton sausage is way better.

To me I don’t understand how Burton sausage is still open, once CH became readily available in stores their quality to me went way down.
