Had a squirrel in one of the bird feeders this morning. I gave him a lead injection with the Tikka, and the wife was immediately after me to get rid of the carcass. But I forgot. Just now we were standing in the window watching the twin fawns in the front yard/pasture when she remembered the squirrel that I had forgotten. We switched our attention to where the squirrel was and darned if there wasn’t a whopper of an Owl standing on the squirrel. He just stood there for maybe 5 minutes before lifting off to a nearby oak tree, with the squirrel.

I mentioned to the wife that I knew an Owl would get the squirrel, but she called BS...

Wish I could shoot the squirrels in my yard, well done by you and the owl.

Got another squirrel bird seed thief a day or so ago. Owl got that one and ate it. Didn’t get a squirrel today, but the Owl is sitting on a low limb, waiting. He and I have the beginnings of a synergistic relationship, though I let him down today.

That is awesome, I have only seen little Barred Owls at my house and those arent a common sight. I would love to be able to watch a big barn owl every now and then.

I was talking to the guy who processes my deer last year, and he told me an owl had swooped down and stolen the rabbit fur lure he was using for calling in coyotes. The lure part is magnetically attached, and the owl took off with it. smile

Not sure about owls but hawks only need to eat about every 3 days.

Waste of good squirrel. Try barbecuing the young ones. Stew the old ones.

Pretty cool photo!

If you're shooting the squirrels with lead pellets and the owl is eating them regularly...you're slowly killing that owl via lead poisoning also via ingestion. I'd recommend just throwing the squirrel out. Just the $0.02 from a biologist who has looked at a lot of lead poisoning in birds, both waterfowl and scavenging birds.

does Tikka make a pellet gun? I would guess it was a rifle and the bullet passed thru ...

It was a 40 gr pellet from my 22LR, and just one of those, so worry not about the Owl.

I have bigger things to worry about. We had a bobcat in the yard a couple of days ago, which is no big deal, but we have all those new fawns. The wife loves those fawns. Last evening that bobcat let out an inhuman howl and the wife jumped 2 feet in the air and both cats tried to rip the screen getting back inside. So she said to shoot the bobcat, which might be tough if I never see it again, but I’m not shooting the bobcat. Ahhhh...Wimmin!
