I am looking to advance the duck hunting ponds on our property. We are located in south Texas just south of Eagle Pass. We get a large assortment of ducks. We have many ponds throughout the property, some hold ducks well, some don't. What can I do to those that don't to make them more appealing? Any suggestion is appreciated

Are you able to control water levels? If anything just spread some Japanese millet along the edges this summer if there's wet soil around the edges that will get some sun. Make sure to keep it wet. If it's probably going to dry out, try brown top millet.

in your area with the amount of rainfall yall get on a normal year, I would go more towards some sort of aquatic that grows in standing water that doesn't require water control. wigeon grass, pondweed, coontail, hydrilla, duckweed, etc

Good point. If it's controlled by a well of some type then I'd still plant millet where you can. A variety of food sources is better to hold birds as they have different needs based on when in the season they're there and weather. Drop the water down to expose the mud and spread jap millet. Then pump it to "flush" the millet after it comes up to keep the soil from drying out as needed.

After reading all the posts, I have nothing to add. If you have some way of controlling water level, that will make a lot of difference.

I agree with yall on the millet if possible, but in that area, water isn't just bubbling outta the ground, and you never know when a good rain is coming, or not

Any other recommendations on things to plant in and around ponds?

We have also had good luck with the Biologic Guides Choice Waterfowl mix. Depending on the pond, a heavier mix of milo may work well if the area dries out. Being able to raise and lower water at will is key. If you can not do that then the best way to encourage aquatic vegetation growth is to do what you can do keep the water clear and allow light to penetrate. Especially if they are natural low areas that held water over the years, you likely have a suitable seed bank in the soil already of plants that thrive in the area under the right circumstances.
