I'm looking for a retirement area that would be somewhat equal distance to Tyler, Austin and Houston as my three boys live in those towns. I'm not opposed to the Temple, Huntsville, Bryan/CS areas but don't know much about where a good area would be. Would like 1-3 acres as well. Any suggestions?

We live on the west side of Temple, and it's exploding right now. A big portion of west Temple is zoned for Belton school district, which for school aged kids is desirable, hence the explosion on our side of town. Parts of temple are nice, but other parts are pretty slummy (but most towns this sized are that way). Smaller tracts of land are going for ridiculous amount of money right now. You can buy 10 acre tracts east of town for about the same as a 1-2 acre tract out by the lake. I personally like the Salado area. It's a little pricy, but it nice.

Take some road trips and find an area that you like then search landsoftexas.com to see what's available.
In the end, it's not the years in your life that count, it's the life in your years.

Lived in a house on Lake Belton my final year at Fort Hood. Had incredible neighbors and loved the area. Five minutes from two boat ramps, HEB, and Ace Hardware. My neighbor was a cardiologist so I assume there is pretty good healthcare around as well.

Trust me, choose it for yourself, not the kids location. Today's kids are more mobile that we were, they can move for new jobs. In retirement you won't want to move every time they do. Choose your location based on your interests as to what you want to do in your retirement years and the location based on the quality of medical care.

Austin and Houston would be college station, but you add Tyler and you're looking at corsicana possibly. I dont recommend that town at all, it's a freaking dump.

I'm around 2years from retiring, the kids can come to me.

Just my .02 cents. Belize is equidistant from Tyler, Austin and Houston.

Hearne, Franklin, Calvert area would be kinda sorta in the middle area that wouldn't be too far outside of metro areas for medical needs ... no clue what type of neighbors might be around there though. I would suspect land prices would be drastically lower than closer in to metro areas also but not sure if there would be any smaller tracts that weren't riddled with mobile homes ...

They had to shut down the Wal-Mart in Hearne because of all the theft, I wouldn't want to live there.

Look at small towns around Waco, just about centered, the small town land and house price go down as you get farther away, but the ambulance ride gets longer as you increase distance to save money. When minutes count you do not want an hour ambulance ride.
Doctors? I see at least one every month, sometimes 2 or 3 a month, even a 15 minute drive can get old 3 times a month. And what about the availability of Doctors in the area
If you like to fish, how close are public lakes? Several close lakes is better than driving an hour to one. Even small municipal lakes can be hidden treasures, or a good place to just drown worms.

We live in the country near Groesbeck. 120 miles to Dallas, 120 to Austin, 140 to Houston (north side), and about 140ish to Tyler. Several lakes around. 40 miles from Waco. Small town America. Good BBQ, Ok Mexican food, Subway, Sonic, couple of decent cafes. One donut shop. One Bush’s Chicken. One gun shop. A NAPA and one hardware store and lumberyard.
