I have told this story here before...

We were vacationing in Costa Rica a few years ago for spring break. My son and I went to the swim up bar. There were 3 seats and an older (50's) lady was sitting in the middle one. She asked if she could move down to make room for us and my son (10) said, "No ma'am, we are just getting some drinks and then leaving" The lady said, "Are you sure?" and my son said, "Yes ma'am." She looked at me and said, "I don't think that I have ever been called ma'am in my life, including from my own children." I said,"Well ma'am, I am guessing you don't live in Texas."

She was from New Jersey... roflmao

When the kids were young I enforced it. They still do in the right circumstances.

I still do when addressing anyone my age or older.

I figured her answer "Are you sure?" was she thought you might like to hang out longer with her! cheers

This 100%. I rarely use sir/ma'am with my parents, usually more with my mom. I don't see it as a respect thing with them. Now with every other human I do use yes sir/ma'am especially with students at school.

What is so wrong with "yeah" is the word itself or the inflection of the voice?

Older than me you are a Sir. Younger than me and I respect you you are also a Sir. Got very few younger and quite a few older and have never been called on it.

If my Son's forget their manners, they get a pop knot on their head.

If my daughter's forget their manners, I do my best to scare them. smile

Well mine has a bit before she can talk, but she'll be taught to say yes/no ma'am/sir.

I always say sir or ma’am to most people older than me... I hang out with a few older guys that don’t like being called sir because it makes them feel old.

My daughter is 25 and my son is 20. They have always done us proud by consistently saying Yes/No Sir/Mam.

If anything, they are respectful!
