Growing up, I was required to say "Yes" at a minimum and say "Yes Sir/Ma'am" to anyone older than myself, especially to my grandfather. Saying Yeah to my dad was a big no no. However, most kids these days say Yeah, or whatever slang version they say. My kids have gotten bad about saying "Yeah" these days, and it's like finger nails on a chalk board to me. I know it was how I was raised, but I'm curious how others feel. I don't require a Yes Sir, but I do expect a Yes and not a Yeah answer.

Do you require your kids to say Yes, Yes Sir/Ma'am, or whatever?

My kids are better with me and mom, if they forget, typically only need 1 reminder. The summer program they are in is also a martial arts training place where respect is big so they get it all day there as well. I've already noticed a difference in both my almost 6 yr old and 8 yr old.

I used to. but the older I get the less I see of any manners. So today, people are lucky if they even get an acknowledgment from me.

It's also noticeable when you say "good morning" to some one in your place of work and they stare a hole right through your head. I've gotten to where I make sure to say to those who don't usually respond, and have been rewarded with an email saying I was offensive when I asked why don't they say something. That "people" asked me in his email to not say good morning to him anymore. What a trip!

Me too. I have to watch out though because I work for a company based out of Vancouver, the Canadians do not like to be called ma'am/sir. They are not real polite when they let you know that either.

I typically use sir and ma'am with people I am not familiar with. Only time I had to use sir and ma'am with my parents was when I was in trouble. I wasn't a trouble maker. Trying to keep my son using sir and ma'am but at 4 its a constant battle. I respect my parents a lot more than saying sir or ma'am ever could.

I say yes/no sir/ma’am, and I get in more trouble because of it.

“Don’t call me that, I feel old”

Just habit.

same here. I can remember way back 50 years ago when fishing below the Wright-Patman dam, I was just out of the military and accustomed to saying yes sir/ma'am to anything that walked. My dad heard me saying yes ma'am to a black women. He told me I didn't need to say that, told him I was used to doing it.

I was raised with yes sir and no sir. The exact phrase was: "All I need to hear from you boy is yes sir and not sir, with very damn few no sirs!" At almost 70 I still say yes sir and no sir or yes ma'am and no ma'am, even to folks about half my age or younger. I don't demand it of the kids or grandkids, yes and no are fine, but "yeah" gets a mild talking to.

I never wrote upset. I'd simply rather be called Bill. My daddy was mister Oxner.

I don’t put up with yeah out of my boys or their friends. It’s yes sir at my house. It doesn’t take long to get them trained.

That’s the evolution of it all. You were passed that title once he was through with it, sir.

Personally, I’m 38. If I’m speaking with someone my elder, I just can’t use their first name without feeling awkward about it, especially to their face. It’s a respect thing to me.

My brother is 40, while talking to an 80 year old, he’ll talk to them like they’re buddies that go way back. “Hey man, hows it going?” I could never do that.
