I’ll kill one just to watch it die. People that say they don’t kill rattlesnakes around their house don’t live where there’s many rattlesnakes around their house. On my ranch, I go ride around just at dusk just to kill all the rattlesnakes and copperheads that lay out on the gravel road soaking up the heat from the sun heated gravel. If I didn't, someone would have been bit by now for sure. Getting a dozen in 10 minutes is pretty easy. Their populations are managed just like everything else on my place.

People with snake problems need to have my hog problem. Seeing a snake of any kind is rare.

Rattlesnakes meet their maker. All others are free to go about their way. I hate rodents more than snakes, but I can't risk leaving the rattlers around with kids and dogs always around our place. Heck, I've never even been to California

I'm starting to wonder if the recent buzz on not killing poisonous/venomous snakes is something that California transplants brought with them. I noticed comments on a local FB page where a woman was scolding someone for mentioning the old phrase, "Red touch yellow, kill the fellow" because it was not always accurate. She noted that the Shovel-nosed Snake, which lives in far western states, doesn't follow the rule. I'll try to remember that the next time I visit California.
Now as for poisonous vs venomous, doesn't it really make a difference if the toxin is ingested or injected? The end result is often very much the same. I've been here for 53 years and have sense enough not to kill non-venomous snakes. I think people that kill anything that slithers may just be terrified city boys who don't know the difference.

To each thier own. I was raised to kill all venomous snakes that wandered around the house. Killed tons of Rattlers to eat. Nowadays I enjoy catch catching all snakes. Not the most intelligent but it's my thing. I believe we are not going to hurt the ecosystem or drive any one species extinct by killing snakes when encountered. We managed to erratic bears from the landscape, not so sure snakes are going to be as easy. Anyway my two cents! Adios!

I cant get on board with the venom vs poison thing, just like I cant with the magazine vs clip thing, and you can call your carbonated beverage a pop, coke, soda, soda water etc. and I wont give a damn.
I kill "dangerous" snakes around my house and wherever else pretty much. I leave the others alone other than when im mowing my yard, they just appear as a red mist out the discharge shoot.
It's hell eatin em live

The whole premise is silly. If anything, it’s a city vs. country thing. Though I know a heckuva lot of country folks who kill every snake they see. I imagine it’s just a person to person thing.
I learned long ago you can't reason someone out of something they don't reason themselves into.

I know the right word is venomous ...just always seemed a better word for any correspondence with my ex-wife or an ex-girlfriend...I got struck by a copperhead in '08...worked out way worse for the snake ...Raised in San Diego, CA, officially been a "Texan" since 1985 when the Border Patrol sent me to El Paso, so more than half my life here...I'm 62...never "hunted" for snakes and let most live, that I encountered...but I saw the damage to a dog that a rattler can do, so dangerous reptiles and insects find no quarter on my piece of God's Country...just sayin'

Rattle snakes I dispatch or any other "poisonous", couldn't resist, snakes. I work a lot outside and don't take the time to watch/look for snakes. Most times I will take out rat snakes out of nesting boxes and pitch them across the fence without harming them. I do this till I can tell if a particular one keeps coming back and eating my eggs. If they keep coming back they get the shovel.

Coral snakes are one the one venomous snake I’ll catch and relocate. Handled many, never been bitten and they are rare enough I’ll continue to release them unharmed. Also, here In etex we don’t have many rattle bugs so they often get relocated unless they are very aggressive and become a pain to catch or handle.
Copperhead or water moccasin gets popped on the nearest tree, board, post or anything else around.

Growing up I used to see a lot of coach whips while roaming the hill country, and they were fast so I never killed one. I don't see them much anymore, but I've had close calls with rattlers walking to and from my stands at dusk or dark, and I make sure if possible to not have that problem arise again. I try to make sure of where I'm sticking my hands and where I place my feet but sometimes trailing deer it's every man for himself. Rattlers do climb into bushes, either after birds or to stay cool in the heat of summer or early fall, and you might get to see one at eye level going under brush looking for blood while tracking a deer in the dark. I'll give them a pass if they don't stick around, but otherwise they will meet their demise.

I relocate all snakes that are in my yard, usually 8-16 Rattlers a year. Don't like to kill any snake and as Texan as anyone here. Rattlers are a part of life here on the ranch, just have to be careful and stay aware.

I have a hoe leaned up against the north side of the house and one on the south side. We relocate heads from bodies at my house. Maybe 30 per year.

People that just kill every snake that they find don't realize they're inviting a potentially venomous snake in. Snakes follow a food source. If you kill a rat snake, coach whip, or other non venomous snakes, you're opening up a food source (primarily rats). What would you rather have eating your rats, a harmless Western Rat snake or rattle bug? Or are you that afraid of snakes that you'd just prefer to have rats and mice around? Also, if you kill an Indigo or Timber rattler you're killing a protected species.

I don't think I have killed a snake in over 20 years. They are an important part of nature and most of them just want to be left alone. I may kill one if I found a poisonous one laying at the foot of the porch but other than that they will always get a pass from me.

The only snakes I have killed have been ones crossing the road that I don't see in time. It's not that I like snakes it's just that I appreciate their place in the food chain. That being said ... I have yet to have a close encounter with an angry rattler when walking around. I do wear gaiters but I'm not promising I may not overreact.

When I'm in a pit blind for archery antelope and one falls into the hole with me, he's usually flat before I get him ID'd. If I have time to actually look at them, I usually move them aside and keep on trucking'....

Not surprised....I have come upon many more Coral Snakes in the 'City' than I have ever found out in the woods.

I have killed about a dozen coral snakes in the past 10+/- years just west of Georgetown and only 1 rattlesnake, which really surprises me. I would probably leave the coral snakes alone but having little grandkids around, not going to take that chance. I leave nature to it's course out in the wild most of the time.

I think I'll add fire ants to my list of bugs and critters that someone can relocate for me if they feel it's better not to kill them. As crazy as it sounds, there are those who believe all living things have their place and that we should leave them be. There's even a kid's movie that follows that message, not to mention others who tout the "green" mindset to children. Taking care of the environment is a good thing no doubt. However, as always, let's use common sense. Link
