I have about 600' of pipe fence to build around our little property.....will need around 65 holes dug, drilled, blasted, light sabered...etc. The soil is very rocky. Some places have rock that breaks up fairly easy, and some places it is fairly solid. 2' deep is the goal, deeper on corners and gate ends.
What is the best option to get these punched out?

About a 50hp tractor with a Beltec carbide tipped auger. You need the down pressure on the hydraulics to push through the rock.

On a big job like this a skid steer mounted auger (carbide bit again) would be faster, and worth the extra $$ to rent one. Just my opinion.

Oh man, I just noticed you are in Wise County. I know just what you are getting yourself into. The Beltec carbide tipped auger is the only style that will do it. It will raise the rear wheels to place weight on the auger guide because the auger will try to skate when it hits that hard limestone. Then it uses hydraulic pressure to push down on the auger. It’ll drill through anything short of rebar reinforced concrete, and it will put the hole right where you want.

That’s how I’ve seen it done.

Dave’s way will also work if the front on the skidsteer is heavy enough to hold the auger in place.

Oh, don’t expect it to go quickly. It took my neighbor three days to drill holes for his backyard fence. He drilled dry though, I would water the hard bottom holes.

agree on the Beltec ... my home place is solid limestone about 6+/- inches down, layer about 5-6' thick based on the hole they dug/jack hammered/blasted to put in our septic system. We had a guy put up ornamental fence across the front and 5' chain link down the side, across the back and back up to the house. about 350 feet worth and about 26 posts if memory serves me. He hired a guy with a tractor & Beltec for $10 a hole, knocked it out in one day.

Thanks for the input....about a mile south of NRS. Rock is thick in places, and mild in some. I’d jump all over $10 a hole!!!

Beltec is the best answer....it’ll dig dirt like the rest of them but will eat rock when necessary...

If you haven't done it rent/get one of these. Still slow with Beltec Auger and carbide toothed bit. Drilled about 100 over at Lake Travis when I bought this puppy and took awhile. Most through solid rock. Oh a the shear is a life saver also. [Linked Image]

Guy that did my fence here in Georgetown used the carbide auger on a tractor. He told me he had the tires filled (I think he said with water) to get more weight on it. Went pretty smooth.

House before in Leander they jack hammered the holes. Got 3 bids on the fence and went with the cheapest one. I got home from work as they were finishing up the first day and he told me they had to add $2000 to my price because they had to jack hammer 45 of 46 holes. I told him tough luck. No way a fence company in the Austin/Hill Country area doesn't know that it's solid limestone around here.

We used a jackhammer with a pipe bit, worked great in Mills County. Yeah, lugging it around sucks but those holes came out so perfect it was easy as pie to drive the pipe and NO CONCRETE involved.

We built fence from 1996 to 2001, full time, and used a tractor and auger. In 2001 we got a skidsteer and BelTec hydraulic auger, that is still going today. The auger on a tractor is a total piece of junk compared to skidsteer mounted. A tractor will never put the psi on a bit that a skidsteer will. In soil, the skidsteer can drill a 3' deep hole every 90 seconds.

Don't think twice about using a tractor for this job, unless you want it to take 5 days to make the holes. When you build femce for a living, ain't nobody got time for that.

A large air compressor and jack hammer. If it is really rock it is the only way to go. We have some serious rock and it is the only solution. But the jack hammer sucks if there is no rock.

Any of you know if a BelTec will go through granite ? We have plenty of both granite and limestone up here. Sometimes fence posts get a pile of rocks for a base.

Yes and no!! Limestone around weatherford all day long, granite down mason/llano county not so much.

I know geographical references might not help much, but I’ve found limestone most the time no issues. Granite sometimes depending on the amount.

They have their limitations but are second to none

I would say that carbide is harder that granite but granite is very hard. It will be slow going.
