I'm at a shop that has a 4-10's and an 8 on Friday. Been that way for, well ever.
We would do an 11 or 12 at times plus maybe a 6 on Saturdays.
Just heard today that they are going to put us on mandatory 13's next week. I have no desire to do 13's.
I'm guessing if I refuse to work 13's that I can be fired. Is this a fact?

Good luck. Start looking. I hated it when you were out of a job.

Lol

That exactly what it means. In Texas you can be fired at will of the employers. Most of the unions have been ran out of the state.

With that said if you’re a valued employee they will not fire you for balking on a day or two of 13s. If it’s such a company that will then they’re already paying you handsomely for it or it’s a low rent company with no future anyway.

I ain't quitting, nobody here is very thrilled with this. End of fiscal year, sure they are trying to push as much stuff out as possible.
Not to damn happy about it though. Had enough of the long hours back in the hay days of oil field when I was younger.
Next generation of ownership wants company to go above and beyond.

I worked for a shop that tried to implement 3x12, 1x4 because it maximized machine time. All the leads and programmers said we would walk. The compromise was 4x10 with optional OT the other 3 days. 3 years later we went back to 5x8. The owner realized the overhead required to keep tooling, materials, and etc available cost more than the gained income.

Doesn't matter if the company seems to important/necessary to the military. Quality will suffer, the customer will notice, costs will skyrocket to compensate, and moral will plummet. These people are textbook morons.

Are you salary or hourly? If salary, give it some thought. If hourly, enjoy time and a half.

I get OT weekly, 50 hours every week. I've worked many mandatory 12's in my line of work for alot of years.
These guys just wanna get stupid and push out as much work as possible before end of fiscal year.
But working mandatory 13's is just crazy talk.
We're a bunch of 50-65 year old burn outs, need some young guys for this roflmao

Well, if you are experiencing burn out then, according to the W H O, you have a disorder. A disorder you can use to qualify for a protected class for potential discrimination lawsuit.

You must be a machinist. I’ve learned machinists will complain no matter if there’s too many or too few hours. I quit listening to them years ago and keep piling the work on when it’s there. I tell them to be happy we’re all making money and all have a job. It sure beats not being able to pay the bills. They’ll start complaining quickly as well if hours drop below 50 for any length of time.

I used to be a OT who-re back in my non-exempt days, averaged well past 65 hours a week for years, got to depending on that income, then got moved to exempt ... poof, all that additional income gone but still expected to put in whatever time was needed to meet deadlines. I gradually cut back over the next year or so and then got questioned on why schedules were being missed. Took them some time to understand the lack of motivation.

If its just short term, suck it up and hit the targets but I would also have a side conversation with management that you and others are putting in extra effort to make the company meet goals ...

4-10's, but they've been making you work Fridays? Sounds like a 5-8 schedule to me.

I'd follow my famous line "8 and the gate" and see how that goes

Probably get fired if you don't have union backing 2cents

168 hours in a week.

If you work 84 per week you still get 3.5 days / 84 hrs off per week.
6 - 13 hour days = 78 hours, leaving you 3.75 days / 90 hrs off per week.
If you only work 72 hrs a week you get 4 days / 96 hrs per week off work.

That's what's wrong with this country, folks got soft, afraid of work, expect recognition or a pat on the back for showing up & doing what they get paid to do.
Then you have them folks that get paid overtime / time & a half after 40,,, and they complain, work that pays one and a half times more than normal rate, oh the horror.

To burn out you gotta be on fire to begin with,,, hard to even get warm working 60 hrs per week and getting 4.5 days / 108 hrs off every week.

Buncha lightweights.

4-10's and 8 on Friday. I work thru lunch to get the extra 2 hours a week to make it an even 50.
No lunch break on Friday.

Pretty dumb not to include sleep. Let's just say you need 8 hours a day for sleep and incidentals. Suddenly your 84 listed above is 28. You now have four hours a day to take care of your family, house, yard, yourself, vehicles, any animals, laundry, food, etc. Good luck.

Dang.
Here I am thinking that my 40 hour week and only Sat and Sun off, really sucks.
For some real time off I gotta use one of my 27 paid vacation days. With the flexibility to “work from home” whenever I feel like it, I find it hard to take it all during the year. Especially with the eight paid holidays we are required to take.
