Looks like I drew my Kansas muzzleloader tag. I have never hunter there but got a lease this season. Haven’t even seen it yet. We are heading up soon. Since my uncle didn’t draw I might carry his scopes pro hunter. I really want to break in the hawkens.

You get game with your Hawken, you will never forget it! Hunting in the old traditional manner with smokepoles like that is an experience that will stay with you forever. A friend invited me to hunt some of his property in Oklahoma this season....and asked me what I would hunt with. I told him "what else"...a muzzleloader....

I need to get mine going. I used to have an in-line and got rid of it. Then I picked up A TC Seneca off the forum in 45, and I inherited my Dad's old TC Hawken 50 that he bought right after he saw the Jeremiah Johnson movie the umpteenth time right after it came out. I guess what slows me down is the thoughts of cleaning them......

I’ll be using a muzzleloader for the first time when I go up to Kansas. I am pretty excited about it all.

I take mine to the range/land about every other trip. I’ve probably put 150 rounds through the hawkens in the past year. 90 grains of pyrodex RS and 195 gr powberbelts are shooting great. 1 inch groups at 100 with iron sites and a clean bore.

I hunt with M/L side lock only.

I shoot competition at the state and national level, again side lock only.

I look here at times, seems the interest is in only in-lines.

The Texas state championship is 04-09 June in Brady. Black powder and supplies are supposed to be there.

Is it flint lock only or does percussion count as well? What are the regs for the competition?

Thanks josh

Rifle, percussion and flint
Pistol- percussion and flint
Shotgun

The above are all side lock.

Do a search for Texas Muzzle Loading Rifle Assc. and look under Swap Sheet.

I will try to send the rules via PM.

Rifle: CVA Accura MR and a Traditions Deerhunter kit gun, both .50cal.

Waiting to see next week if I draw a CO muzzy tag. If so I'll need ideas on irons for the Accura!

Still here, just pretty darn busy right now. Didn't draw my Kansas muzzy deer tag this year, which was a shock. Thought I had them all figured out, and now have to wait a year.

Did get drawn for a Utah muzzy antelope and waiting for draws in AZ, WY, and ID to know final hunt plans.

That's getting pretty serious about your muzzleloader hunting !

I like traditional M/L, guess it's my age. I shoot flint pistols better than percussion for some reason.

In modern guns, I still like nice wood and checkering. Just cannot adjust to plastic.

I have a 191 year old flintlock with a brand new stock and touch-hole. I went to the range the same day it arrived in the mail and to my total surprise it was sighted-in. I loaded my usual starting point of 80 grains FFFg Goex, .530 swaged ball and .018 pillow ticking patch with 7:1 Ballistol/Water dry lube. Pan primed with FFFFg Goex. First 5 shots at 50-yards were 2.5" high on the bullseye and grouped into one expanding hole. Moved target to 100-yards and was totally surprised to see a 3" 3-shot group with perfect elevation and windage! The following Saturday I snuck around a 10,100 acre ranch dodging mosquitoes and snakes to finally get a Red Deer in my sights. The shot hit perfect and the deer went down. The in and out holes were large and although the deer didn't go anywhere the amount of blood on the ground was significant. I am planning to hunt with the rifle exclusively for the remainder of this year at least.

Colt, have you had any problems using your flinters in the weather in Minnesota?

Dont own flint lock... Did find one (flint lock) identical ta my .45 Kentucky bang $120.00, just didnt have the money, out of work, not by choice... Have shot flint in winter though, key is keeping it dry, also flint plays roll, it fired twice, pan egnited, just not powder in barrell, third time it did the k- k- pow...
Do prefure old school black powder (side lock & flint) ...

I’ve shot a lot more deer with a front-stuffer than with a centerfire. Grew up hunting in Arkansas and Oklahoma, and both have muzzleloader seasons that precede modern firearm season. I still go to Oklahoma every year for ML season. Love the sound, the smell, and the smoke.

For those who did not go to Brady last week, you missed a nice shoot. Cooler than normal and no wind to speak of.

Plenty of powder was to be had at decent prices.

Next shoot is October for those interested and need supplies. There is a 1St time shooters match.
