Skunk in the front yard early this morning, coming toward the house and our cat at a pretty fast clip. I grabbed the front door gun, the Tikka, and stepped outside. Shot him once, still running, so shot him again. Still moving. Shot him a total of 5 or 6 times (Blazer 40 gr RN, if you must know) till he gave it up. Since I was still in my underwear, I went back in the house. Wife is following me around insisting I move the skunk back to the rear of the property. After getting dressed, I couldn’t find the ‘dead’ skunk. Turns out he dragged his miserable stinkin self under the guest house. I had to remove some skirting, hoping he wouldn’t be TOO close. He was, and he still had enough left to give a half hearted squirt. Missed me, mostly. Got the 9422 from the barn and shot him a bunch. Had to leave the boots outside when I came Infor lunch. Shoulda left the pants out there too.

So maybe I should be shooting hollow points instead of the RN bullets. I bought the Blazer RN ammo for the accuracy, and yup, they are accurate. A bit less accuracy and a bit more impact seems in order.

It stinks where I’m sitting. Wife hasn’t commented yet.

Sometimes things just don't go the way you think/wish they should …

AKA — Stuff Happens

Maybe hollow points would be better, maybe not.

I just switched to HP ammo, instead of a shotgun. Did a good bit of shooting at 25 and 100 yards. The HPs that were close at hand were Remington Thunderbolts, which have the rep of being not so accurate, but they shot into one hole at 25 yards, as did the Blazers. I’ll go with the T-bolt HPs for the next skunk and we’ll see how that goes.

I really am happy with the Tikka T1X. Light, balanced well, and so very accurate.

For long shots I’ll use the 223 and 40 gr BTs and make it rain skunk chunks.

Thunderbolts are plenty. Needed to be shot in the top of the head.

I saw these on midway:

https://www.midwayusa.com/product/1017367255/winchester-varmint-x-ammunition-12-gauge-3-1-1-2-oz-bb

Price is a little high but lead BB's are back baby! This is the perfect load for shotgun only zones, anything up to pigs at close range. Perfect for anything you don't want in your backyard. Forget about hevi shot at $5 a pop!
