Looking on information on West Texas Aoudad Hunts. I am in the planning phase…..

What outfit did you go with, what was your experience, who would you recommend ?

What did you enjoy most, what would you do differently ?

How many miles did you hike on an average day, what was the loadout in your dayback ?

Post pics if you have them….

Thanks !!

Went with West Texas Hunt Organization, Mulie Mike on here.

It was a great hunt. If I hunt them again it will be with them. [Linked Image]

Spot and stalk or what?

Hilly countryside?

Spot and stalk in rugged territory. You may want to post this question in the Exotic hunt forum. More people will see it there.

i recommend Mulie Mike as well. Hunted the 4D South ranch during the rut, Guided. Spot and stalk. Got to the ranch by sun up. Located them by 12:30. Had one dead on the ground soon after that. Took us another 10 + hours to retrieve and get back to the truck. Don’t be fooled by the quickness of my success. It can be very brutal country. Total mileage I am guessing was 10 miles. Everything will poke you. Biggest regret was not taking gloves to save my hands from the very rough jagged rocks you will climb up and down. Load out pack was minimal as far as weight goes. Kill kit, spotter, snacks and lots of water. Less than 20 pounds maybe. West Texas free range Aoudad hunting is the cheapest sheep hunt going, and it’s in some of the most remote and beautiful parts of Texas. You won’t regret doing it. [Linked Image]

The pics are beautiful and congratulations on your trophies ! I've hunted Black Gap and Big Bend Ranch before..... love the country... I have contacted Mulie Mike and am narrowing the choices, I'd like to stay on a ranch. If you don't mind me asking, what's your rifle recommendation - cal, scope config and round. I am probably going with by .280 but it seems most are using something of a heavier caliber.

A .280 should be fine with a stout bullet. I've killed a few with a .257 wby mag and 110 grain accubonds, they took multiple hits. Seen them soak up some lead from 7mm mags and keep on going for quite a ways as well. My wife hit one square in the neck with a 7mm-08 at 50 yards and It hit the dirt, got up and ran into the wild blue yonder. That is one animal that I would say its appropriate to bring a .300 mag on if you have access to one, but a lot of hunters kill them with .270's, 280's, .30-06's, etc.

They are an African species, like most African game their vitals are between their shoulder blades, not behind. I recommend hitting them in the shoulders and you should be fine, but if you shoot and they are still on their feet keep shooting.

West Texas Aoudad is one of my favorite hunts. You will be hooked once you do it

you will be fine. Use a good bullet and aim for the shoulder

Thanks for the tips on shot placement... with the exception of pigs I usually go for the seam... but in this case that would have been very wrong.... I'm looking at a Berger 140gr VLD because it's what I'm familiar with.. going to spend sometime looking at the options on the West Texas Hunt site... getting excited about this....

I’ve shot two aoudad. One with a 6.5 CM (120 gr bullet) from 240 yards. Even with a less than ideal shot that thing didn’t go more than 15 feet and couldn’t move any further. I also shot one with a 7MM STW and it rolled it down the hill. Second shot was only about 100 yards but a 7MM Mag will do the trick if you have good placement.

You may wanna look into Wildlife Systems Inc. I don't have personal experience with them but they have been around a long time and seem very reputable and professional and I know they put a lot of folks on a lot of big game in Texas including Aoudad. Pretty sure their website will have tons of pics and lots of info.

It's awesome when someone posts your question for you! Thanks SS! Looks like a few good suggestions to start with, especially about the gloves!
