Got back last week from 10 days of hunting in the Eastern Cape of South Africa with Huntershill. Wonderful experience, the terrain is very different from the hunt I was on two years ago in the Limpopo province. First morning we drove around the mountain to glass from a high point and spotted a group of black wildebeest on a far hillside, we were able to drive to the back side of the hill and stalk around the side, by then they had fed higher than we were and we spooked them. Luckily they ran down below us and stopped on a flat spot about 160 yards away and I made a good shot quartering to me on a nice bull. That afternoon we went to a low fence cattle/sheep farm and were fortunate to find a herd of eland on top of the mountain and after recovering my eland in the valley below we bumped into a group of waterbuck leaving the property and I punched 3 tags the first day.



The second day we were in a low area near a small river there were several drainage's lined with trees that made their way to the main channel, while passing through one of the drainage's we spotted a nice nyala bull in a shaded area, fortunately he had not seen us and after some time we were able to determine he was a mature animal with a lot of mass.

Third day we bumped a red lechwe driving around and after a short stalk were able to make a good shot while he was quartered to us.


The fourth day we drove about 2 hours southeast of the lodge for bushbuck, the terrain was similar but the vegetation was very different, the property owner had cleared out some areas but the valleys were thick with with a lot of it nearly impossible to walk through. We spotted a nice ram that morning that was on a far hill side, we stalked down the side of the mountain we were on until we were approximately 360 yards. I made a shot across the canyon and unfortunately didn't aim high enough with the bullet striking him in the leg just below the vitals. Found blood and bone but the dogs could only track it for about 50 yards.
Day five we found a small group of zebra with one stallion, made a double lung shot on the stallion about 300 yards, PH said I think you shot under him when the bullet hit the ground on the other side. I was fairly confident I heard the bullet slap and 30 yards later he collapsed.

Day six we went to another low fence farm and found a large group of fallow deer. There was one large male but we were unable to get shot, we later found a smaller group with a nice buck and made a good shot.

Day seven we hunted warthogs most of the day walking for a couple hours down a river crisscrossing back and fourth. We saw several during the day but no mature males. That afternoon we spotted a group of about 30 springbok with a couple nice rams got to within 300 yards and took a ram with really good mass.

Day eight we went back to look for the larger fallow deer and while driving through the property we spotted 3 mountain reedbuck on a cliff to our north. We got to within 200 yards and they froze on the hillside thinking we couldn't see them. The male had a large bush right behind his horns and would not move so we could see his length. After waiting for several minutes for him to make any movement so we could differentiate his horns from the bush my PH said based on what I can see, I think he's mature go ahead when you're steady. After my shot the tracker went up to retrieve him and when he got to him he started yelling, the PH said he must be really big for Henry to be yelling like that. After we got him down and measured, his longest horn was 7 7/8". My PH said it was the best one he'd ever taken with a client or personally.

Day nine we were back after bushbuck but on the property just west of the one we hunted on day four. This property was a little more open but still had some extremely thick areas. We spotted 6 large rams but normally they spotted us the same time we spotted them and one bound later they were out of sight.
Day 10 we headed out for sable after driving for a while that morning we spotted a nice male about a mile away going over a notch between two peaks. We drove as close as we could and stalked up to the the notch he'd gone through. He'd stopped just over the top and had begun to feed, and hadn't noticed us come through the notch my PH said he was definitely mature and to shoot when he turned.

It was a wonderful trip, Huntershill is a unique place having around 70 species from all over the globe in one place. Also got to go up for a ride in the helicopter which was a first. Can't say enough about the people, the food, and the hospitality.

We also visited a small school and took a couple of SCI blue bags. We went one morning and bought school supplies, medical supplies, toys, candy, and clothing. We visited with the teachers and students for a couple hours and really enjoyed the morning.

One of the teachers husband built a small building for the smaller children out of the wooden crates the wind turbines were shipped in. The company had given the school a few of the crates after the turbines were erected.

Actually it was 20, I killed 10 and my buddy Mark killed 10. My zebra wasn't in the picture and shortly after it was taken he shot his warthog out of the helicopter.

Did you have any hassles taking the suppressor? I'm headed over in Aug and so far we can't find any reason it's not OK to take suppressors.

great trip

This trip I didn't take a weapon. The outfitter has a large gun room with many options and the rental is free, so I left mine here and used theirs. Wonderful gun Howa 1500 in .308. Only thing I didn't care for was the second focal plane scope, but all in all it shot great and made the in and out of airports much easier and a lot less worry.
