I found myself getting away from the CC in the field more and more after the e-collar. Thoughts?

After the dog is collar conditioned, I see no reason for a check cord.

On training birds I use a cc still to direct the dog exactly where I need him

Running on wild birds never understood why anyone would use a cc. Dog has to learn to hunt and find birds on his own. You can’t teach this

I’ve put them on wild pups in the field so they could run and I could still catch them. I won’t let a pup run anymore until they’re collar broke. Too many things can go wrong without control. I lost a goofy pup a couple of years ago on a check cord, it was probably a blessing. I also had a very nice pointer pup 35 years ago in the Sandhills get his cord caught up in a water truck driving down a lease road. He was pulled under the truck and killed.

I didn’t have a shock collar back then. But they’re the best thing that ever happened for dog training. I still remember the first time I went hunting with a guy that had one. It impressed me.

Some of Y’all remember the ways dogs were disciplined before collars. Sometimes a hands on approach is best, but the collar provides instant correction and is a major reason not near as many dogs wash out as they used to.

In the field I found that an old round red or orange extension cord work great cut the ends of but a clip on one end and leave the other end straight. It wont snag like a rope.

Check cords were for yard work, Electric collars were for field work after yard work was complete. Running young pups less than a year old on wild birds is different though.... let the birds teach them.

I use CC with young dogs working on steady with pigeons out of launchers.
